El Salvador, officially the Republic of El Salvador, is a country in Central America. It is bordered on the northeast by Honduras, on the northwest by Guatemala, and on the south by the Pacific Ocean. El Salvador's capital and largest city is San Salvador. The country's population in 2023 was estimated to be 6.5 million.
The 2016 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and also known as Rio 2016, was an international multi-sport event held from 5 to 21 August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with preliminary events in some sports beginning on 3 August. Rio de Janeiro was announced as the host city at the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 2 October 2009.
The El Salvador national football team represents El Salvador in international football, and is governed by the Salvadoran Football Federation (FESFUT).

Arles Antonio Castro Laverde is a male professional track and road racing cyclist from Colombia. He won a silver medal for his native country at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil alongside Carlos Alzate, Jairo Pérez and Juan Pablo Forero in the Men's Track Team Pursuit. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, PR China and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Takeshi Salvador Fujiwara Salazar is a sprinter specializing in the 400 meters sprint event. Born in El Salvador, he represented the country until 2013, now representing Japan. Fujiwara is currently the Record Holder in the 400mts of the city of Tokyo where the next Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be held in 2021. He competed at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens where he was 6th in the heats. After that he has competed in 6 other World Championships in Italy, Japan, Spain, Qatar, Turkey and in 2017 in the Bahamas World Relay Championships as a member in the 4 × 400 m and 4 × 100 m relay squad placing 6th in the B Final for team Japan.
The 2012 Central American Junior and Youth Championships in Athletics were held at the Estadio Nacional Flor Blanca "Magico Gonzalez" in San Salvador, El Salvador, between May 25–27, 2012. Organized by the Central American Isthmus Athletic Confederation (CADICA), it was the 25th edition of the Junior (U-20) and the 20th edition of the Youth (U-18) competition. A total of 83 events were contested, 42 by boys and 41 by girls. A total of 20 new championship records were set. Overall winner on points was Costa Rica.

Equestrian competitions at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto were held from July 11 to 25 at the Caledon Equestrian Park in Palgrave. The cross-country portion of eventing took place at nearby Will O' Wind Farm, which is located in Mono. Due to naming rights the venue was known as the latter for the duration of the games. The competition was split into three disciplines, dressage, eventing and show jumping. Each discipline awarded a team and individual set of medals.

The Secret Anti-Communist Army was a front organization that operated in Guatemala and El Salvador during the Guatemalan Civil War. Like other earlier organizations, such as the MANO and the CADEG, the ESA existed as a front for a covert program of selective assassination by the Guatemalan security services. The first documentation of it came from the New York Times on 4 August 1977. The ESA made its existence more widely known during the upheaval caused by the September 1978 bus fare strikes in Guatemala City. On 18 October 1978, the ESA authored the first of a series of public bulletins containing "death lists" of persons which the organization considered to be "communists". It claimed to be independent, but was coordinated and staffed by members of the military and security services and was allegedly run by Colonel German Chupina Barahona, Director General of the National Police (PN) from 1978 to 1982. Often, the lists of targets were provided by the Minister of the Interior, Donaldo Alvarez Ruiz.
Aleksandar Kukolj is a Serbian judoka. He won the Grand Slam of Abu Dhabi in 2016. In 2016 he took the victory at the Grand Slam in Tokyo. Kukolj started with bronze in 2016 in Havana and silver at the Grand Prix in Baku and silver the Grand Prix Samsun in 2015 and Zagreb in 2014. Kukolj won World Cups in Lisbon in 2012 and won the Panam Open in San Salvador in 2014 & Mediterranean Games in 2013. He won European bronze as Junior and U23. He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, in the men's 90 kg.
El Salvador sent a delegation to compete in the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil from 7 to 18 September 2016. This was the country's fifth successive appearance in the Summer Paralympics since debuting at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. The Salvadoran delegation to Rio consisted of one athlete, powerlifter Herbert Aceituno, who qualified for the Games through his world ranking of 13th and his participation was confirmed by the International Paralympic Committee in August 2016. He failed to lift 185 kilograms (408 lb) in three attempts during the men's 72 kg tournament and was therefore not ranked in the final standings by the judges.
