The 2017 Caribbean Handball Cup was a Handball Event held at the city of Cartagena Colombia, from 24 to 29 October to qualify the nations of the Caribe region for the handball tournament of the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games. [1] [2]
The Caribbean Handball Championship is the official competition for Men's and Women's national handball teams of Caribbean. In addition to crowning the Caribbean champions, the tournament also serves as a qualifying tournament for the Central American and Caribbean Games.
The city of Cartagena, known in the colonial era as Cartagena de Indias, is a major port founded in 1533, located on the northern coast of Colombia in the Caribbean Coast Region. It was strategically located between the Magdalena and Sinú rivers and became the main port for trade between Spain and its overseas empire, establishing its importance by the early 1540s. During the colonial era it was a key port for the export of Peruvian silver to Spain and for the import of enslaved Africans under the asiento system. It was defensible against pirate attacks in the Caribbean. It is the capital of the Bolívar Department, and had a population 971,592 as of 2016. It is the fifth-largest city in Colombia and the second largest in the region, after Barranquilla. The urban area of Cartagena is also the fifth-largest urban area in the country. Economic activities include the maritime and petrochemicals industries, as well as tourism.
The 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games were held in Barranquilla, Colombia.
The Colombia national handball team is the team of national players Colombia representing the Colombian Federation of Handball in international competitions organized by the International Handball Federation (IHF) or the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Never participated in the Olympic Games and world, only participates in the Pan. In recent years the discipline is growing. The Cuba men's national handball team represents Cuba in international handball competitions and is controlled by the Cuban Handball Association. The Mexico national handball team is the national team of Mexico. It takes part in international handball competitions. |

Niurkis Mora is a Cuban handball player. She plays for the club Santiago de Cuba and is member of the Cuban national team. She competed at the 2015 World Women's Handball Championship in Denmark.
Carolina López is a Dominican team handball player. She plays for the club Simon Bolivar, and on the Dominican Republic national team. She competed at the 2013 World Women's Handball Championship in Serbia, where the Dominican Republic placed 23rd.

The event was originally set to be held in Toronto, Canada but the Canadian Handball Federation withdrew, citing lack of funds.

It acts as the North American and Caribbean qualifying tournament for the 2017 Pan American Women's Handball Championship.
The 2017 Pan American Men's Youth Handball Championship the XIII edition of this tournament took place in Santiago, Chile from 15 to 22 April 2017. It acts as a qualifying tournament for the 2017 Men's Youth World Handball Championship.
The 2017 Pan American Men's Club Handball Championship the X edition of this tournament took place in Villa Ballester, Buenos Aires, Argentina from 24 to 28 May 2017. It acts as a qualifying tournament for the 2017 IHF Super Globe.
