The 2017 GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma was the 17th and final round of the 2017 IndyCar Series season. Josef Newgarden of Team Penske won the pole for the race; he would finish second, which allowed him to win the championship. The Grand Prix of Long Beach is an IndyCar Series race held on a street circuit in downtown Long Beach, California. Christopher Pook is the founder of the event. It was the premier race on the CART/Champ Car World Series calendar from 1996 to 2008, and the 2008 race was the final Champ Car series race prior to the formal unification and end of the open-wheel "split" between CART and IRL. Since 2009, the race has been part of the unified IndyCar Series. The race is typically held in April. It is one of the longest continuously running events in IndyCar racing and is considered one of the most prestigious events on the circuit.

William Steven Power is an Australian motorsports driver who currently competes in the IndyCar Series, driving for Team Penske. Power is one of the most successful IndyCar drivers of all-time, currently sitting fifth all-time in wins (41) and first all-time in poles (68) in the sport’s history.
Simon Pierre Michel Pagenaud is a French professional racing driver. He is contracted to drive the No. 60 Honda for Meyer Shank Racing in the IndyCar Series. After a successful career in sports car racing that saw him taking the top class championship title in the 2010 American Le Mans Series, he moved to the Indycar Series where he became the 2016 IndyCar champion and the 2019 Indianapolis 500 winner, becoming the first French driver to win the Indianapolis 500 since Gaston Chevrolet in 1920 and the first polesitter to have won the race since Helio Castroneves in 2009.
Josef Nicolai Newgarden is an American racing driver who competes in the IndyCar Series full-time for Team Penske. He is the 2017 and 2019 IndyCar Series Champion, the 2011 Indy Lights champion, and the winner of the 2023 Indianapolis 500.

Dave Calabro, who shares duties with Bestwick, does not work the Verizon 200 meeting.
