The 2017 High Country Grizzlies season was the franchise's inaugural season as a professional indoor football franchise; they are an expansion team of the National Arena League. The Grizzlies were one of eight teams that competed in the NAL for its inaugural 2017 season.
Led by head coach Josh Resignalo, the Grizzlies play their home games at the George M. Holmes Convocation Center on the campus of Appalachian State University.

The Cleveland Gladiators were an arena football team based in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, and members of the Arena Football League (AFL). The Gladiators played their home games at Quicken Loans Arena, which they shared with the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association and the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League. The franchise was originally based in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and then later in Las Vegas, Nevada, before relocating to Cleveland for the 2008 AFL season. The Gladiators qualified for the playoffs eight times in their history, reaching the ArenaBowl in 2014.
The Idaho Steelheads are an American professional minor league ice hockey team based in Boise, Idaho. The team began playing in 1997 and has been a member of the ECHL since 2003. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Steelheads voluntarily suspended operations through at least the 2020–21 ECHL season.

The 2003–04 NBA season was the Grizzlies' ninth season in the National Basketball Association, and their third season in Memphis. It was also the final season playing their home games at the Pyramid Arena. They moved into FedExFourm the next season. During the offseason, the Grizzlies signed free agent James Posey. After two unsuccessful seasons ever since they moved to Memphis, the Grizzlies would finally played around .500 holding a 9–8 record as they acquired Bonzi Wells from the Portland Trail Blazers in early December. However, the team struggled posting a 7-game losing streak at the end of the month. Despite this, the Grizzlies continued to played their best basketball posting an 8-game winning streak in January, and winning 13 of their 15 games in March, as they made the playoffs for the first time in their franchise history, finishing fourth in the Midwest Division with a 50–32 record.

The team plays its home games at T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. Unlike most expansion teams, the Golden Knights have achieved great success in their first three seasons as a professional team, reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in their first year in operation. With 13 playoff wins en route to the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals, they set the record for the most postseason wins by a team in their first playoff appearance. They were defeated by the Washington Capitals in that series, four games to one.
