The 2017 Honduran Supercup was a match arranged by the Honduran Liga Nacional and the Honduran Cup which took place on 2 August 2017 between C.D. Marathón, winners of the 2017 Honduran Cup and F.C. Motagua, winners of the 2016–17 Liga Nacional (Apertura tournament). This was the first official edition of the Honduran Supercup and the 5th overall.

Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Honduras, commonly known as Liga Nacional is the first and highest division of football in Honduras. The league season is divided into Opening (autumn) and Closing (spring). One team is relegated to the Liga de Ascenso and one team is promoted from Liga de Ascenso. Honduran Cup

The Honduran Cup is the top knock-out football tournament in Honduras. The first tournament was played in 1968, four years later the second tournament took the name Copa Presidente in honor of Dr. Ramón Cruz; later, General Oswaldo López changed the name and called it Copa Jefe de Estado. Twenty years later the third tournament was played. From 1992 to 1994, the Cup tournament was played as a separate tournament from the league. From 1995 to 1999, the winner of the first stage of the league tournament was declared Cup champions. In 2015, the tournament was yet again re-launched and re-branded as Copa Presidente. Since 2015, the Honduran Cup serves as a qualifier to the Supercopa Centroamericana.

Background

F.C. Motagua qualified as winners of the 2016–17 Honduran Liga Nacional (Apertura) after defeating Platense F.C. with a 2–1 aggregated score. This was the first appearance for Motagua since 1999. Meanwhile, for C.D. Marathón, this was their first ever appearance in a Honduran Supercup. They qualified as winners of the 2017 Honduran Cup where they defeated C.D. Gimnástico 3–0 in the final match.

In a rainy night, the game started at 19:10 CST. The rules of the game allowed the teams to make a maximum of five substitutions. [2] After a 0–0 drawn in the first half, the goals came in the final minutes of the match. With two goals from Erick Andino (67) and Félix Crisanto (77), F.C. Motagua harvested a comfortable advantage in the score. However, Júnior Lacayo got in the score-sheet for C.D. Marathón seven minutes to regulation but were unable to level. With the win, Motagua obtained the first official Honduran Supercup in history. [3] [4] [5]

The Honduran Supercup is a Honduran football competition held yearly as a preseason match between the reigning champions of the Liga Nacional and the Honduran Cup. The competition started unofficially in 1997, but it was discontinued after just two seasons. In 2015, it was intended to be reactivated, however the match between F.C.
