Election of the President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic will be held on 20 November 2017.

Background

Legislative election was held on 20 and 21 October 2017. ANO 2011 have won plurality of 78 seats. Civic Democratic Party emerged as the second largest party with 25 seats. [2] On 22 October 2017, ANO 2011 announced that it would nominate Radek Vondráček as the President of the Chamber. [3] On 23 October 2017, Freedom and Direct Democracy agreed to support Vondráček. Both parties have 100 seats of 200. [4]

On 24 October 2017, the Civic Democratic Party announced it would nominate Petr Fiala as its candidate. [5] On 25 October 2017, Czech Pirate Party announced it would most likely support Vondráček. [6] [7] TOP 09 announced it wouldn't support Vondráček. [8]

On 31 October 2017, Miroslav Kalousek the leader of TOP 09 called parties to vote for neither of 2 candidates and to jam up the Chamber. This would prevent Andrej Babiš from becoming prime minister. [9]

Fiala withdrawn from the election on 15 November 2017 because Vondráček had support of Pirates and SPD. [10]

On 22 November 2017, Vondráček was elected the President. He received 135 votes. 14 votes were against and 46 blank. [11]

All 200 members of the Chamber of Deputies were elected, with the leader of the resulting government to become the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. Following the 2017 parliamentary elections, the country had been ruled by a minority government consisting of ANO 2011 (ANO), led by prime minister Andrej Babiš, and the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD), led by interior minister Jan Hamáček, with confidence and supply support from the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) until April 2021. Candidates include former Minister of Education and Chairman of Masaryk University Petr Fiala, former Prime Minister candidate Miroslava Němcová and MEP Edvard Kožušník. Fiala was nominated by 12 regional organisations and thus was considered a front-runner. Fiala was also endorsed by acting leader of ODS Martin Kuba. A Civic Democratic Party (ODS) leadership election was held on 13 January 2018. The incumbent leader Petr Fiala sought reelection. Shadow Minister of Education Václav Klaus Jr. was widely expected to run against Fiala. He was considered to be one of the most visible politician of the party. In December 2016, Czech bookmaker company Fortuna wrote a course for Klaus Jr. to replace Fiala on 20:1. Klaus Jr.. decided to not run against Fiala. Approximately 540 delegates were allowed to vote. Fiala received 451 votes and was elected for another term.

Czech political party TOP 09 held a leadership election on 26 November 2017, following the party's poor result in the 2017 Czech legislative election. Jiří Pospíšil was elected as the new leader.

Democratic Bloc was a parliamentary alliance formed in 2017 by four Centre-right parties. Parties agreed to cooperate in parliament. Czech Pirate Party and Czech Social Democratic Party were also offered participation but both parties declined. It was announced on 15 November 2017 on a Press Conference by Petr Fiala. Fiala stated that Democratic Bloc isn't meant to be a long term coalition but its only task is to take over initiative during negotiations of parliament's body and for constituent meeting. Democratic Bloc was dissolved on 21 December 2017.

Presidential elections were held in the Czech Republic in January 2023, resulting in the election of Petr Pavel. Incumbent president Miloš Zeman was not eligible to run due to the two-term limit.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2018 Czech Senate election</span>

Senate elections were held in the Czech Republic on 5 and 6 October 2018 alongside municipal elections, with a second round held on 12 and 13 October 2018. The Conservative Civic Democratic Party (ODS) won the election with 10 seats. Governing parties ANO 2011 and the Czech Social Democratic Party were heavily defeated, winning only 1 seat each. The Communist Party lost its last seat in the Senate when Václav Homolka failed to be re-elected, meaning the party would be without representation in the Senate for the first time in the history of Czech Republic. The election was considered the first major win for the opposition to Andrej Babiš' Cabinet. Commentators including Josef Kopecký also noted ODS confirmed their position as the main opposition party, ahead of the Czech Pirate Party.

The 2019 European Parliament election in the Czech Republic was held on 24 and 25 May 2019, electing the 21 members of the Czech delegation to the European Parliament as part of the European elections held across the European Union.

Election of the President of the Senate of the Czech Republic was held on 14 November 2018. It was held after 2018 Senate election. Civic Democratic Party nominated Jaroslav Kubera, Mayors and Independents nominated Jan Horník and Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party nominated Václav Hampl. Incumbent President Milan Štěch doesn't seek reelection. It was the first time in the history of the Senate that more than 2 candidates run for the position. Senate factions usually came to an agreement about the new President in the past.

A leadership election for ANO 2011 was held on 17 February 2019. Incumbent Andrej Babiš was the only candidate. He won another term when he received 206 votes of 238.

The 2020 Civic Democratic Party (ODS) leadership election was held on 18 January 2020. The incumbent leader Petr Fiala was running for another term as the sole candidate. Fiala was reelected with 90% of the vote.

Senate elections were held in the Czech Republic on 23 and 24 September 2022 alongside municipal elections. The election were won by the Spolu alliance consisting of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), KDU-ČSL and TOP 09 which won 20 seats. The ODS was the most successful party, winning eight seats.
