The Mountain West Conference (MW) is a collegiate athletic conference located in the United States, participating in NCAA Division I. Its football teams compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The MW officially began operations on January 4, 1999. The Aggies, led by first-year head coach Craig Smith, played their home games at the Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah as members of the Mountain West Conference. The Aggies shared the regular-season Mountain West title with Nevada, and defeated New Mexico, Fresno State, and San Diego State to win the Mountain West tournament to earn the Mountain West's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for their first appearance since 2011. They lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Washington.

The 2019 Colorado State Rams football team represented Colorado State University in the 2019 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Rams were led by fifth-year head coach Mike Bobo and played their home games at Sonny Lubick Field at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins, Colorado as members of the Mountain Division of the Mountain West Conference. The Rams finished the season 4–8, 3–5 in Mountain West play to finish in fifth place in the Mountain Division.

The 2020–21 Utah State Aggies men's basketball team represented Utah State University in the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Aggies, led by third-year head coach Craig Smith, played their home games at the Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah as members of the Mountain West Conference. They finished the season 20–9, 15–4 in Mountain West play to finish in second place. In the Mountain West tournament, they defeated UNLV and Colorado State before losing to San Diego State in the championship game. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 11 seed in the South region, where they lost to Texas Tech in the first round.

The 2021 New Mexico Lobos football team represented the University of New Mexico in the 2021 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Lobos played their home games at University Stadium as members of the Mountain Division of the Mountain West Conference. They were led by second-year head coach Danny Gonzales.

The 2021–22 Colorado State Rams men's basketball team represented Colorado State University for the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was coached by Niko Medved, who was in his fourth season as head coach. The Rams played their home games at Moby Arena on CSU's main campus in Fort Collins, Colorado as members of the Mountain West Conference. They finished the season 25–6, 14–4 in Mountain West Play to finish in second place. As the No. 2 seed, they defeated Utah State in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West tournament before losing in the semifinals to San Diego State. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 6 seed in the South Region, where they were upset in the first round by Michigan.

The 2021–22 Wyoming Cowgirls basketball team represents the University of Wyoming in the 2021–22 college basketball season. The Cowgirls are led by head coach Gerald Mattinson, in his third season. The Cowgirls play their home games at the Arena-Auditorium and are members of the Mountain West Conference. The Cowgirls finished tied for 3rd in the Mountain West Conference, but exited the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball tournament in the quarterfinal round, losing to Colorado State 51-38 due to an embarrassing 4th quarter performance.
