The 2019 Central Michigan Chippewas football team represented Central Michigan University in the 2019 NCAA Division I FBS football season. They were led by first-year head coach Jim McElwain and played their home games at Kelly/Shorts Stadium as members of the West Division of the Mid-American Conference.

Offseason

Coaching changes

The 2018 team finished the season going 1–11, the worst season in program history; head coach John Bonamego was fired on November 23 following the team's regular season finale. [1] On December 2, the university announced that Michigan wide receivers coach Jim McElwain had been hired as the program's 29th head coach. [2] [3] Prior to his time at Michigan, McElwain also served as the head coach for Colorado State and Florida.

The MAC released their preseason media poll on July 23, 2019, with the Chippewas predicted to finish in sixth place in the West Division. [4]

He was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 1999 NFL draft. He played college football for the Fresno State Bulldogs. Hall also played for the Atlanta Falcons. In 2017, Hall served as Oregon State's interim head football coach for six games after Gary Andersen abruptly resigned.

James Frank McElwain is an American football coach. He is the head football coach at Central Michigan University, a position he has held since 2019. He announced his retirement on November 20, 2024 and will conclude the season as head coach but plans to remain at CMU. McElwain served as the head football coach at the University of Florida from 2015 to 2017, and Colorado State University from 2012 to 2014, where he was named the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year in 2014. He was the offensive coordinator at the University of Alabama from 2008 to 2011.

John Frank Bonamego is an American football coach who serves as a senior coaching assistant for the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League (NFL). He has two decades of college and pro coaching experience. He played college football at Central Michigan and also was head coach of the team from 2015 to 2018.

The 2023 Mid-American Conference football season was the 78th season for the Mid-American Conference (MAC), as part of the 2023 NCAA Division I FBS football season. Non-conference play began with one game on August 26. Conference play began on September 23 and concluded with the MAC championship game on Saturday, December 2 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. Miami won the East division with a 7-1 conference record with their only loss coming against Toledo. Toledo won the West with a perfect conference record. Their quarterback Dequan Finn won Player of the Year and coach Jason Candle won coach of the year. On October 21, during the regular season game between the division winners, Miami quarterback Brett Gabbert suffered a season ending leg injury.
