On 25 February 2021, hundreds of inmates escaped from the prison in which they were detained in Croix-des-Bouquets, Ouest, Haiti.

Events

A riot began at the prison in Croix-des-Bouquets, a commune in the Ouest department of Haiti. More than 400 prisoners escaped during the jailbreak. During the fight, eight people died at the scene, including Paul Hector Joseph, the prison's director. After escaping, a number of fugitives opened fire in the streets, killing several civilians in the prison's nearby streets and around the entire city. Gunfights between local authorities and inmates then erupted, resulting in the death of some officers. [1] Notable and powerful gang leader Arnel Joseph also escaped from the jail. He fled with an accomplice in a car, but was then found by police, and a gunfight followed. Joseph was shot dead and declared dead at the scene, while his accomplice, who was driving the vehicle, was wounded but fled the scene. [2]

On 10 February 2016, a prison riot broke out at the Topo Chico prison near Monterrey, in northern Mexico. 49 inmates were killed during the riot and ensuing fire. The riot was the most deadly in Mexican penal history, surpassing the death toll of the 2012 Apodaca prison riot. After the rioting, authorities uncovered 'luxury cells' prison leaders had. Among the items confiscated included televisions, mini-fridges, aquariums, and saunas.

The 2017 Kidapawan jail siege occurred when about a hundred unidentified armed men attacked the North Cotabato Provincial Jail in Kidapawan, Philippines at around midnight freeing at least 158 inmates. Five inmates, a barangay official and a prison guard died in the siege. The jail break resulting from the attack is reportedly the biggest in the history of North Cotabato.

Protests began in cities throughout Haiti on 7 July 2018 in response to increased fuel prices. Over time, these protests evolved into demands for the resignation of Jovenel Moïse, the then-president of Haiti. Led by opposition politician Jean-Charles Moïse, protesters stated that their goals were to create a transitional government, provide social programs, and prosecute allegedly corrupt officials. Throughout 2019, 2020, and 2021, hundreds of thousands took part in protests calling for the government to resign.
