The eligibility period for the 21st Americana Music Honors & Awards is April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. The nominees were announced on May 16, 2022 by The War and Treaty at the annual Nominations Ceremony, which was held at the National Museum of African American Music, which featured performances by Adia Victoria and Fisk Jubilee Singers and was livestreamed on Facebook. By the Way, I Forgive You is the sixth studio album by Brandi Carlile, released on February 16, 2018. "The Joke" was released as the album's lead single. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Americana Album in 2019, as well being nominated for Album of the Year.

"The Joke" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. It was co-written by Carlile, Dave Cobb, and Phil and Tim Hanseroth, and produced by Cobb and Shooter Jennings. It was released on November 13, 2017, as the lead single off By the Way, I Forgive You, Carlile's sixth album. With music inspired by "An American Trilogy" by Elvis Presley, the lyrics are intended to uplift people who are marginalized by society. The song received widespread critical acclaim, winning two Grammy awards.

This was the first ceremony to be held since 2019, following the cancellation of the 2020 awards due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The show was broadcast on Circle in the US for the first time and was also available to watch in its entirety on Facebook, alongside a highlights show that aired on PBS as part of Austin City Limits.

Outside Child is the debut album by Canadian singer-songwriter, poet, activist and multi-instrumentalist Allison Russell. Produced by Dan Knobler and released by Fantasy Records on May 21, 2021, it is Russell's first release as a solo artist following two decades of performing and releasing music as a member of the groups Po' Girl, Birds of Chicago and Our Native Daughters. Lyrically, the album details Russell's experiences with the abuse she endured as a child at the hands of her stepfather, with The New York Times describing it as “a harrowing story of survivor's joy” and Russell herself stating that “the record itself isn't really about abuse. It's about the journey out of that, and breaking those cycles. It is about resilience, survival, transcendence, the redemptive power of art, community, connection, and chosen family”.

The 2023 Americana Music Honors & Awards ceremony was held on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at Ryman Auditorium the in Nashville, Tennessee. The marquee event for the Americana Music Association, artists are awarded for outstanding achievements in the music industry. The show was livestreamed on the Circle YouTube channel and on the AMA's Facebook page, plus live radio broadcasts on Sirius XM and local Tennessee stations WSM, WMOT and WRLT. An hour-long special of highlights aired on PBS in November as part of Austin City Limits. The Milk Carton Kids returned to host the ceremony, having previously hosted in 2018 and 2019.

The 2024 Americana Music Honors & Awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the Ryman Auditorium the in Nashville, Tennessee. The marquee event for the Americana Music Association and the centerpiece of their annual Americanafest, artists are awarded for outstanding achievements in the music industry and the americana genre. The show is set to be livestreamed on the Circle YouTube channel and on the AMA's Facebook page, alongside live radio broadcasts on Sirius XM and local Tennessee stations WSM, WMOT and WRLT. An hour-long special of highlights will on PBS in November as part of Austin City Limits.
