The Mid-American Conference (MAC) is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I collegiate athletic conference with a membership base in the Great Lakes region that stretches from Western New York to Illinois. Nine of the twelve full member schools are in Ohio and Michigan, with single members located in Illinois, Indiana, and New York. For football, the MAC participates in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision.

Richard Allen Maloney is an American college baseball coach, the head coach at Ball State since the start of the 2013 season. He is the former head coach of the Michigan Wolverines where he compiled a record of 341–244 in 10 seasons, from 2003 to 2012. He led the Wolverines to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances (2005–2008) and was the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2008.

Third seeded Ball State defeated top-seeded Miami in the championship game by the score of 87–79 to win their second MAC men's basketball tournament and a bid to the NCAA Tournament. There they lost to Memphis State in the first round. Dan Palombizio Ball State was named the tournament MVP.

Ball State defeated Northern Illinois in the championship game by the score of 79–66 to win their first MAC men's basketball tournament and a bid to the NCAA Tournament. There they lost to Boston College in the first round. Ray McCallum of Central Michigan was named the tournament MVP.
