    Richard Allen Maloney is an American college baseball coach, the head coach at Ball State since the start of the 2013 season. He is the former head coach of the Michigan Wolverines where he compiled a record of 341–244 in 10 seasons, from 2003 to 2012. He led the Wolverines to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances (2005–2008) and was the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2008.

The Cardinals, led by ninth-year head coach James Whitford, played their home games at Worthen Arena in Muncie, IN as members of the Mid-American Conference. They finished the season 14–17, 9–10 in MAC play to finish in sixth place. They lost to Ohio in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament.

    The 1986 Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament was held March 6-8 at the Rockford MetroCentre in Rockford, Illinois. Third seeded Ball State defeated top-seeded Miami in the championship game by the score of 87–79 to win their second MAC men's basketball tournament and a bid to the NCAA Tournament. There they lost to Memphis State in the first round. Dan Palombizio Ball State was named the tournament MVP.

    The 1981 Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Tournament was held March 3-5 at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ball State defeated Northern Illinois in the championship game by the score of 79–66 to win their first MAC men's basketball tournament and a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals were led by head coach Al Brown and played their home games at Irving Gymnasium in Muncie, Indiana. After finishing in third place during the MAC regular season, Ball State won the MAC Tournament to receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. As No. 14 seed in the Southeast region, the Cardinals were beaten by No. 3 seed Memphis State in the opening round, 95–63. The team finished with a record of 21–10.
