On 17 November 2022, a fire at a residential building killed 21 people in the Jabalia Refugee Camp in the Gaza Strip. Most of the victims were from the Abu Raya family who were celebrating the return of a family member who had come back from abroad. [1] Israeli media reported that seven children had died [1] [2] while the BBC reported ten. [3]
The fire is believed to have come from large amounts of gasoline somebody had stored inside the building to use a generator. The candles appear to have ignited the gasoline, triggering the blaze. [1] [3]
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ordered a national day of mourning to be held in honour of the victims. The PLO's secretary-general, Hussein al-Sheikh, asked for Israel to open the Erez Crossing in order to let wounded Palestinians seek treatment (the crossing is normally closed because Israel is at war with the militant Islamist Hamas movement which controls the Gaza Strip). Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz confirmed that the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories was looking to provide humanitarian assistance to the fire victims. [1]

Jabalia, also spelled Jabalya, is a city in the Gaza strip located 4 kilometers (2.5 mi) north of Gaza City, in the North Gaza Governorate of the Gaza Strip. According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, Jabalia had a population of 172,704 in 2017. The Jabalia refugee camp is adjacent to the city to the north. The nearby town of Nazla is a part of the Jabalia municipality.

The June 2024 northern Gaza City airstrikes or Al-Shati and Tuffah dual airstrikes took place on 22 June 2024, when two airstrikes conducted by the Israeli Defense Forces occurred at roughly the same time in northern districts of Gaza City, striking the al-Shati refugee camp and the Tuffah district, killing at least 43 people and wounding dozens more.
