Arantxa Sánchez Vicario defeated two-time defending champion Steffi Graf in the final, 7–6(8–6), 3–6, 7–5 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1989 French Open. This ended Graf's winning streak of major singles titles at five. Graf served for the championship at 5–3 in the third set, but lost the game to love and won only three more points in the match from that point. Sánchez Vicario was just 17 years old at the time, and it was the first of her three French Open titles.

Patrick Rafter defeated Greg Rusedski in the final, 6–3, 6–2, 4–6, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1997 US Open. It was his maiden major title. Rafter became the first Australian to win the title since John Newcombe in 1973. It was Rusedski's first major final.

Martina Navratilova defeated the defending champion Chris Evert in the final, 6–3, 6–1 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1984 French Open. With the win, Navratilova completed a non-calendar-year Grand Slam, dubbed the 'Martina Slam', and became only the second woman in the Open Era to simultaneously hold all four major singles titles. It was Navratilova's second French Open singles title and ninth major singles title overall.
