Jennifer Capriati defeated Martina Hingis in the final, 6–4, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2001 Australian Open. It was her first major singles title. With the win, Capriati returned to the top 10 in rankings for the first time since 1993.
Petr Korda defeated Marcelo Ríos in the final, 6–2, 6–2, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1998 Australian Open. It was his first and only major title, and Ríos' only major final; Ríos remains the only man to have held the world No. 1 singles ranking without ever winning a major singles title.
