On 3 March 2023, a fire followed by an explosion occurred at a Pertamina oil depot in Plumpang, Koja, Jakarta. The fire spread to nearby residential areas, and at least thirty three people were killed.
Pertamina's oil storage depot at Plumpang is often considered the most important fuel depot in Indonesia, having been established in 1974 and having a capacity of nearly 300 million liters of fuel. By itself, the depot handles around 20 percent of the country's fuel supply, primarily serving the Greater Jakarta area. It has previously experienced a fire in 2009, when one person was killed. [3]
Residential areas were initially quite distant from the fuel depot, with a plot of land owned by Pertamina separating them. However, starting in 1998, locals had gradually encroached into the Pertamina plot, building houses illegally until thousands of residents were living in close proximity to the fuel depot. By the time of the fire, some houses were just one meter away from the depot's fencing, and the Pertamina plot had become a dense residential area. [4] Pertamina intended for the minimum distance between the depot and residential areas to be 300 meters following the 2009 fire. [5] [6]
Sometime around 8 PM local time (UTC+7), a fire broke out at the fuel depot. According to Pertamina's spokesperson, the fire had originated from the depot's receiving pipeline. [7] It was suspected that a lightning strike had sparked the fire. [8] Firefighters received a report of the fire at 20:11. The fire spread to a number of nearby houses, [7] and local witnesses reported a loud explosion. [9] Tens of local houses were burned, although by around 23:00 most of the residential fires had been put down. [10]
Two firetrucks and ten firefighters were initially deployed, and this gradually increased to 52 firetrucks with 260 firefighters. By around 22:30, the fire had been localized and the blaze was put down by around midnight. [11]
Tens of burn victims were evacuated to nearby hospitals. By 23:00 local time, 17 people had been confirmed killed, including two children, with over fifty injured. [12] [2] This was later revised down to 13 killed as of the following day, with three children among the killed. [13] A further four bodies were found in Saturday morning in the ruins, increasing the death toll to 17. [14] The death toll was updated to 19 the following day, with another 3 teenagers still missing. [15] Around 600 people were evacuated overnight to the North Jakarta mayoral office and nearby public buildings. [11] By 24 March, as more victims in hospitals succumbed to injuries, the death toll had risen to 33. [1]
Fueling operations resumed at the depot by 04:00 local time the following day. [16] Pertamina utilized several other fuel depots in Greater Jakarta to make up for the disruption at Plumpang. [17] State-owned enterprises minister Erick Thohir stated his intent to relocate the residents living close to the facility. [5] President Joko Widodo visited an evacuee camp on 5 March, and floated the options of either relocating nearby residents or to move the Pertamina depot to a reclaimed island. [18]

The Tangerang fireworks disaster occurred on 26 October 2017 at the PT. Panca Buana Cahaya Sukses, a fireworks manufacturing factory in Kosambi, Tangerang, Indonesia. The explosion occurred in a warehouse connected to the factory and ignited a large fire. 103 people were working at the factory at the time of the explosion. At least 49 people were killed and 46 others were injured in the fireworks accident. Authorities confirmed that several people were still missing. It was the deadliest industrial accident in Indonesia.
The 2017 Java earthquake occurred on 15 December 2017 when a moment magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Java, specifically the city of Tasikmalaya on 23:47:58 West Indonesian Time in West Java, Indonesia. The earthquake struck at a depth of 91 km and was categorized as a strong but deep earthquake. It was initially registered as a 7.3 magnitude earthquake by Indonesian agencies. Widespread damage was reported across Tasikmalaya, the nearest major city to the epicentre. A tsunami warning was immediately issued by the authorities but was subsequently cancelled. Four people have been confirmed dead.

The 2019 North Maluku earthquake, a shallow 7.2 magnitude earthquake, struck the island of Halmahera, North Maluku, Indonesia on 14 July 2019 at 18:10 local time with its epicentre located at South Halmahera. It struck at a shallow depth of 10 km (6.2 mi) near Labuha, a small port town located in Bacan Island. The earthquake produced a non-destructive 20 cm tsunami, which struck Labuha just minutes after the shaking started. 14 people were killed by the earthquake while 129 people were injured, and more than 50,000 people were displaced. The earthquake inflicted a total damage of Rp 238 billion.
The 2019 Sunda Strait earthquake occurred on the night of 2 August 2019, when a magnitude 6.9 earthquake rattled Sunda Strait at a moderate depth of 52.8 kilometres. The epicentre was located 214 km from Bandar Lampung, the capital of Lampung and 147 km west of Sumur, Pandeglang Regency. The earthquake struck with a maximum intensity of VI (Strong). The earthquake prompted a tsunami warning in the area, with authorities urging coastal residents to immediately evacuate to higher grounds.
On 26 September 2019, a strong magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Seram Island in Maluku, Indonesia, near the provincial capital of Ambon. The earthquake struck at 07:46:44 Eastern Indonesia Time with a shallow depth of 18 km. The tremor could be felt throughout the island, with an intensity of very strong (VII) reportedly felt in the provincial capital of Ambon.
From 3 to 8 December 2020, several floods and flash floods impacted various areas within Indonesia and Malaysia, causing mass property damage, injuring and killing many, and prompting the evacuation of those in affected houses. They were caused by a convergence zone formed by Cyclone Burevi in Sri Lanka and a low-pressure area in the Philippines. Wider coverage was done on the floods in the province of North Sumatra, which killed eight, injured 5,000, and damaged over 2,000 properties. The ones in neighboring province Aceh affected over 8,000 people, and those in Malaysia affected over 2,000 people across four states. Meanwhile, floods also impacted the Indonesian island of Java, though with less severity.

A moment magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Majene Regency in West Sulawesi, Indonesia, on 15 January 2021, at 02:28 WITA. The reverse faulting shock initiated at 18.0 km (11.2 mi) depth with an epicenter inland, located 32 km (20 mi) south of Mamuju. It was preceded by a Mw 5.7 foreshock several hours prior. Shaking from the mainshock was assigned a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VI (Strong) in Majene and Mamuju. Four of the five regencies in West Sulawesi were affected. More than 6,000 structures were damaged or destroyed; damage was estimated at Rp829.1 billion rupiah. At least 105 people were confirmed dead; more than 3,300 were injured and thousands were displaced.
The Zahro Express disaster occurred on the morning of 1 January 2017 when an Indonesian-flagged wooden passenger vessel caught fire in the waters of Thousands Islands Regency, off the coast of Jakarta. She was travelling from Jakarta's Muara Angke to Tidung Island, a popular tourist destination. The ferry, named MV Zahro Express, was carrying 216 passengers and 5 crew members. Of the 221 passengers and crews, a total of 24 people on board lost their lives.
On 8 September 2021, a fire occurred in an overcrowded prison block in the city of Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia, in Greater Jakarta. The fire began at about 01:45 WIB in sector C of the Tangerang prison, killing 41 inmates and injuring a further 75. More victims succumbed to their injuries in the following days, raising the death toll to 49.

On 21 November 2022, at 13:21 WIB (UTC+07:00), a Mww 5.6 earthquake struck near Cianjur in West Java, Indonesia. The strike-slip earthquake occurred with a focal depth of 11 km (6.8 mi). Between 335 and 635 people died, 7,729 were injured and five remain missing. More than 62,628 homes were damaged across 16 districts in Cianjur Regency and the surrounding region. It is the deadliest earthquake to hit Indonesia since the 2018 Sulawesi earthquake. Damage evaluated after the event earned it a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe).
