On 15 December 2023, militant attacks were launched against the Pakistan Army and local police in Tank, Pakistan. Ansar ul-Islam claimed responsibility for the attack. The attacks occurred at a police station in Tank District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. [1]

Attack

On the morning of 15 December 2023, militants attacked a police station in Tank district however were repelled by local police, with the militants engaged in a gun battle for hours with the local police. [1] [2] The attack just come days after the Daraban police station attack, Pakistan's deadliest terrorist attack in 2023. Local police chief Iftikhar Shah stated that 5 police officers and 5 militants were killed in the exchange, with another 3 wounded. [3] In a statement, Shah stated, "Our force on guard engaged them in a gun battle for hours,". Akhtar Hayat, chief of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police announced that the remaining militants involved in the attacks were being searched for, saying, "We are searching for the rest of them, including two who suffered wounds,". [4] On the same day, the Pakistani Taliban launched an attack on a Pakistani army base near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, with 2 security personnel killed in an attack in the Khyber District, and another 7 injured. [5]

Perpetrators

Ansar ul-Islam, a relatively newly active militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack as their first attack. [4] The attack came days after the Daraban police station attack.

Surge of attacks

There has been a surge in terror attacks in Pakistan in 2023 amid a resurgence of the Pakistani Taliban and heightened tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, with the Pakistani government accusing Afghanistan of harboring militants and with militants using Afghan territory to launch attacks, although the Afghan government denies this. [6] [7] The attack also comes amidst the mass deportation of Afghans by the Pakistani government. [8]

The Pakistani Taliban, formally called the Tehreek-e-Taliban-e-Pakistan, is an umbrella organization of various Islamist armed militant groups operating along the Afghan–Pakistani border. Formed in 2007 by Baitullah Mehsud, its current leader is Noor Wali Mehsud, who has publicly pledged allegiance to the Afghan Taliban. The Pakistani Taliban share a common ideology with the Afghan Taliban and have assisted them in the 2001–2021 war, but the two groups have separate operation and command structures.

Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad was a combined military operation by the Pakistani military in support of local law enforcement agencies to disarm and eliminate the terrorist sleeper cells across all states of Pakistan, started on 22 February 2017. The operation aimed to eliminate the threat of terrorism, and consolidating the gains of Operation Zarb-e-Azb which was launched in 2014 as a joint military offensive. It was further aimed at ensuring the security of Pakistan's borders. The operation underwent active participation from the Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Police and other Warfare and Civil Armed Forces managed under the Government of Pakistan. On 1 December 2017, 3–4 gunmen arrived at the hostel of Agricultural Training Institute at Agricultural University Peshawar and started firing as a result of which at least 13 people were killed and 35+ were injured. Tehreek-e-Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

On 18 December 2022, the Pakistani Taliban carried out an attack on a counterterrorism centre in the Bannu District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They took the officers hostage until 20 December, when Pakistan's security forces lay siege to the centre, releasing all the hostages and killing 25 militants inside. Two officers were killed during the siege.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023 Peshawar mosque bombing</span> Suicide attack in Pakistan

On 30 January 2023, at around 1:30 p.m. Pakistan Standard Time (UTC+5), a suicide bomber set off an explosion within the Police Lines mosque of Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, killing 84 people and injuring 217. The mosque, located within a high-security compound containing several government offices, including the headquarters of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, was infiltrated by the perpetrator after he had disguised himself as a police officer, allowing him to pass through several security checkpoints and join the congregational Zuhr prayers. The bombing destroyed a wall and the roof of the mosque, burying hundreds of people in rubble.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan</span> Pakistani Islamist insurgent group

Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan is an insurgent Deobandi jihadist group in Pakistan that has gained notoriety for its involvement in attacks on Pakistani military and police targets. The group is believed to have been founded in February 2023 and has claimed violent attacks against Pakistani police, security, and military installations in various provinces of Pakistan.

On 12 December 2023, the Deobandi jihadist insurgent group Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan attacked a police station in Daraban, Dera Ismail Khan District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, killing at least 23 people.

Operation Azm-e-Istehkam is a counter-insurgency operation launched by the government of Pakistan in June 2024. The operation was approved by prime minister Shehbaz Sharif. The operation will include not only military action, but also socio-economic uplift to deter extremism.
