The 2023 AfroBasket Women was the 28th edition of the tournament and held from 28 July to 5 August 2023 in Kigali, Rwanda. [1] [2] [3]

Contents

Nigeria won their fourth consecutive and sixth overall title after defeating Senegal in the final. [4]

Format

The 12 teams were split into four groups of three teams. The first-placed team qualified to the quarterfinals while the other two teams played in a playoff round. A second-placed team faced off against a third-placed team and vice versa. A knockout-system was used after the preliminary round and the losing teams of the quarterfinals were playing classification games while the winners played out the champion. [5]

The Nigeria women's national basketball team, also known as the D'Tigress, represents Nigeria in international women's basketball competition, and are regulated by the Nigeria Basketball Federation, the governing body for basketball in Nigeria. AfroBasket 2015 was the 28th edition of the AfroBasket, a men's basketball continental championship of Africa. It also served as the qualifying tournament for FIBA Africa at the 2016 Summer Olympics Basketball Tournament in Brazil. The tournament was held in Tunis, Tunisia. The winner qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics Basketball Tournament.

The 2017 FIBA Women's AfroBasket was the 23rd AfroBasket Women, played under the rules of FIBA, the world governing body for basketball, and FIBA Africa. The tournament was hosted by Mali from 18 to 27 August, with games played at Bamako. The winners and runners-up qualified for the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.

The 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification for the FIBA Africa region, began in November 2017 and concluded in February 2019. The process determined the five African teams that would participate at the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

The 2019 AfroBasket Women was held from 10 to 18 August 2019 in Dakar, Senegal. It was also the first step for the qualification for FIBA Africa for the women's basketball tournament at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. The top six teams were qualified for the African pre-qualifying tournament.

It was originally scheduled to take place between 17 and 29 August 2021, but it was moved back a week due to the COVID-19 pandemic, to 24 August to 5 September 2021.

The AfroBasket 2021 qualification was a basketball competition that was played from January 2020 to July 2021, to determine the fifteen FIBA Africa nations who would join the automatically qualified host Rwanda at the AfroBasket 2021 final tournament.

The 2021 AfroBasket Women was the 25th edition of the tournament and held from 18 to 26 September 2021 in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The top two teams qualified for one of the qualifying tournaments for the 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.

The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification for the FIBA Africa region, began in November 2021 and concluded in February 2023. The process determined the five African teams that would participate at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

The 2021 Women's Afrobasket qualification occurred on various dates on 2021 to determine which African national basketball teams would qualify for the 2021 Women's Afrobasket. Teams compete with other teams in their respective "zones" for a spot in the championship tournament.

The 2023 Women's Afrobasket qualification was played on various dates in 2023 to determine the seven teams who qualified for the 2023 Women's Afrobasket. Teams competed with other teams in their respective "zones" for a spot in the championship tournament. There were seven zones in total.

The AfroBasket 2025 qualification will be a basketball competition that will be played from February to November 2024, to determine the 16 nations who will qualify for the FIBA AfroBasket 2025.
