A by-election was held in the provincial riding of Bay of Quinte on September 19, 2024, to elect a new member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario following the resignation of Progressive Conservative MPP and cabinet minister Todd Smith for a new job in the private sector. [1] It resulted in the victory of PC candidate Tyler Allsopp, though by a reduced margin compared to his predecessor.

Smith is a member of the Progressive Conservative party and has held a number of cabinet positions under Doug Ford, including Minister of Government and Consumer Services from June to November 2018; Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade from November 2018 to June 2019; Ontario Government House Leader from June 2018 to June 2019; and Minister of Children, Community and Social Services from June 2019 to June 2021; and Minister of Energy from June 2021 to June 2024, and Minister of Education from June to August 2024. Tyler Allsopp is a Canadian politician and Progressive Conservative member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Bay of Quinte. He previously served as a member of city council in Belleville as a Ward 1 councillor since 2021, and owned a bicycle shop.
