Nordic combined is a winter sport in which athletes compete in cross-country skiing and ski jumping. The Nordic combined at the Winter Olympics has been held since the first ever Winter Olympics in 1924, while the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup has been held since 1983. Many Nordic combined competitions use the Gundersen method, where placement in the ski jumping segment results in time (dis)advantages added to the contestant's total in the cross-country skiing segment.
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships is a biennial Nordic skiing event organized by the International Ski Federation (FIS). The World Championships was started in 1925 for men and opened for women's participation in 1954. World Championship events include Nordic skiing's three disciplines: cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and Nordic combined. From 1924 to 1939, the World Championships were held every year, including the Winter Olympics. After World War II, the World Championships were held every four years from 1950 to 1982. Since 1985, the World Championships have been held in odd-numbered years.
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 took place 16–27 February 2005 in Oberstdorf, Germany, for the second time after hosting it previously in 1987. The ski jumping team normal hill event returned after not being held in 2003. The double pursuit distances of 10 km women and 20 km men were lengthened to 15 km for women and 30 km for men. Team sprint was also added as well. The Nordic combined 4 × 5 km team event had its change between ski jumping points and cross-country skiing start time changed from 1 point equals to 1.5 seconds to 1 point equals 1 second at this championship.
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 took place 22 February – 4 March 2007 in Sapporo, Japan. It was the second time this city has hosted these championships, having previously done so in the 1972 Winter Olympics. Sapporo was selected as venue by vote at the 43rd FIS World Congress in Portorož, Slovenia, on 6 June 2002. It also marked the third time the championships were hosted outside Europe in a year that did not coincide with the Winter Olympics; it was the first championship held in Asia. The ski jumping team normal hill event was not held, as it had been in 2005.
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 took place 18 February – 1 March 2009 in Liberec, Czech Republic. This was the fourth time these championships were hosted either in the Czech Republic or in Czechoslovakia, having done so at Janské Lázně (1925) and Vysoké Tatry.
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 took place between 20 February and 3 March 2013 in Val di Fiemme, Italy, for the third time, the event having been hosted there previously in 1991 and 2003.
Turkey competed at the 2011 Winter Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey.
The 41st FIS Nordic World Ski Championships were held from 20 February to 3 March 2019 in Seefeld in Tirol, Tyrol, Austria. It was the second time Seefeld in Tirol hosted the world championships, the event having been hosted there previously in 1985.
The 2015–16 FIS Cross-Country World Cup was the 35th official World Cup season in cross-country skiing for men and women. The season started on 27 November 2015 in Ruka, Finland, and ended on 12 March 2016 in Canmore, Alberta, Canada.
The FIS Nordic Junior and U23 World Ski Championships 2017 took place in Park City, United States from 30 January to 5 February 2017. It was the 40th Junior World Championships and the 12th Under-23 World Championships in nordic skiing.
The FIS Nordic Junior and U23 World Ski Championships 2018 took place in Kandersteg and Goms, Switzerland from 27 January to 4 February 2018. This was the 41st Junior World Championships and the 13th Under-23 World Championships in nordic skiing.
The FIS Nordic Junior and U23 World Ski Championships 2019 took place in Lahti, Finland from 19 January to 27 January 2019. This was the 42nd Junior World Championships and the 14th Under-23 World Championships in nordic skiing.
The FIS Nordic Junior and U23 World Ski Championships 2016 took place in Râșnov, Romania from 22 February to 28 February 2016. It was the 39th Junior World Championships and the 11th Under-23 World Championships in nordic skiing.
The FIS Nordic Junior and U23 World Ski Championships 2014 took place in Val di Fiemme, Italy from 28 January to 3 February 2014. It was the 37th Junior World Championships and the 9th Under-23 World Championships in nordic skiing.
The FIS Nordic Junior and U23 World Ski Championships 2007 took place in Planica, Slovenia and Tarvisio, Italy from 12 March to 18 March 2007. It was the 30th Junior World Championships and the second Under-23 World Championships in nordic skiing. Cross-country skiing and nordic combined events were held in Tarvisio, while the ski jumping events were held in Planica.
The 2021 FIS Nordic Junior and U23 World Ski Championships were held from 9 to 14 February 2021 in Vuokatti and Lahti, Finland.
Gyda Westvold Hansen is a Norwegian Nordic combined skier who represents IL Nansen. She became the first ever World Champion in women's Nordic combined after winning the gold medal in the inaugural World Championship race, individual normal hill/5 km, at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2021. She is the 2021 World Junior Champion in individual normal hill and won the silver medal at the same event in 2019 and 2020. Westvold Hansen was also a member of the Norwegian team that took the gold medal in the mixed team normal hill competition at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics.
The 2022 FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships were held from 22 February to 6 March 2022 in Zakopane, Poland and Lygna, Norway.
Cross-country skiing at the 2023 Winter World University Games was held at the Lake Placid Olympic Sports Complex Cross Country Biathlon Center from 15 to 22 January 2023.
The 2023 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships was held from 21 to 29 January 2023 in Östersund, Sweden. Originally scheduled to take place in the Swedish region of Jämtland and include nordic, alpine and snowboard competitions following the successful inaugural edition of the 2021 Combined Snow Sports World Championships in Lillehammer.
