David Wheaton was the defending champion, but lost in the quarterfinals this year.
Defending champion Andy Murray defeated Roger Federer in the final, 7–5, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2010 Canadian Open. Murray became the first player since Andre Agassi in 1995 to defend the title. It was also the first time in the tournament's history that the top four seeds reached the semifinals.
Six-time defending champion Rafael Nadal defeated David Ferrer in the final, 6–4, 7–5 to win the singles tennis title at the 2011 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Novak Djokovic defeated the defending champion Rafael Nadal in the final, 7–5, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2011 Madrid Open. It was Djokovic's third ATP Masters 1000 title of the year, his sixth title of the year, and the 24th title of his career.
Ivan Ljubičić was the defending champion, and defended his title defeating Fernando González 6–3, 6–4, 7–5 in the final.

John Fitzgerald and Anders Järryd lost in the third round to McEnroe and Wheaton. It was their only Grand Slam loss of the year, as they won the other three majors in 1991.
Lan Bale and John-Laffnie de Jager were the defending champions, but did not participate together this year. Bale partnered Wayne Black, losing in the semifinals. de Jager partnered Christo van Rensburg, losing in the first round.

Jason Stoltenberg and Todd Woodbridge successfully defended their title, defeating David Rikl and Tomáš Zdražila in the final, 6–4, 1–6, 7–5 to win the boys' doubles tennis title at the 1988 Wimbledon Championships.
Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis were the defending champions, but lost in second round to Jan Apell and Mike Bauer.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut were the defending champions, but chose not to defend their title.
