Before the stabbing, the school was placed into a lockdown on 29 January after "threatening behaviour between a small number of students" was noticed. [2] [3]
At 12:17 GMT, police were called to the scene after Harvey Willgoose was fatally stabbed, allegedly by a 15-year-old boy. [1] [4] [5] Another pupil ran away from the attacker after witnessing the scene. [6] One pupil went outside and heard two or three Year 11's were shouting that "somebody got stabbed, come here to a teacher." [7] The pupil then said that he "went outside to see what was going on and I saw a body on the floor." Willgoose was stabbed three times in a school courtyard as pupils watched. Shortly after the police arrived, the area outside the school was subject to a cordon to aid with the investigation. [7] Emergency responders, including an air ambulance, arrived at the school, which was promptly locked down. Despite desperate efforts to save him, Willgoose died shortly before 4:00 P.M. [7]
Shortly after the incident, a 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder. [8] The teenager was then remanded into a youth detention centre, and appeared before the city's crown court on 6 February 2025. [5] [3] The teenager had his head held down at the court throughout the hearing:
You will be aware that you are charged with offences arising from an incident on Monday the 3rd of February. There is an allegation that you murdered Harvey Willgoose on that date. It is early days in this investigation but this allegation involves a knife, a hunting knife, being taken into school and used to stab another pupil in broad daylight, resulting in the death of that pupil.
— District Judge Tim Spruce, [5]
On 4 February 2025, Harvey's mother, Caroline Willgoose, and other members of the school paid their tributes to honour Willgoose by putting flowers on the school wall along with balloons and a Sheffield United shirt. [9] [10] Outside a local sports club, more flowers were placed with several heart shaped balloons and two large red balloons in the shape of the number 15, to reference the age of Willgoose. [11] The school was closed for the following days as police investigated. [12] A line of flowers have also been put outside Willgoose's family home, five miles away from the school. [9]
