The 217th Guards Airborne Regiment is an airborne regiment of the Russian Airborne Troops. It was formed in 1948 from elements of the 296th Guards Airlanding Regiment. Currently based in Ivanovo, it is part of the 98th Guards Airborne Division. [1]
The regiment was formed on 1 October 1948 in Galyonki from elements of the 296th Guards Airlanding Regiment. It was part of the 13th Guards Airborne Division. In April 1955, the division was disbanded and the regiment transferred to the 98th Guards Airborne Division. In 1965, for its performance in exercises on Sakhalin, the regiment received thanks from the USSR Ministry of Defense. At the time, the regiment was commanded by Major Gennady Margelov. On 22 February 1968, the regiment was awarded the Order of Kutuzov 3rd class. [2]
Beginning on 25 July 1969, the regiment moved to Bolhrad. [3] 119 personnel of the regiment fought in the Soviet–Afghan War. [4]
The regiment deployed to Oktemberyan between 23 and 29 March 1988. On 21 June it deployed in Stepanakert, which it left on 2 August. It was deployed to Yerevan on 21 September and returned to Bolhrad on 16 November. On 24 May 1989, it went back to Yerevan, which it left on 25 August. It deployed to Baku on 3 October and remained there until 18 October. [5]
While paratroopers were being airlifted out of Baku on 18 October 1989, an Il-76MD crashed near the city, killing 9 crew members and 48 paratroopers from the regiment. On 16 January 1990 it again deployed to Baku and left there on 16 March. As a result of the Dissolution of the Soviet Union, elements of the regiment became the Ukrainian 25th Airborne Brigade. [5] Beginning on 23 April 1993, the regiment moved to Ivanovo, where it is still based today. [1]
The regiment fought in the Second Chechen War, during which its chief of staff was Yunus-bek Yevkurov. [6]
In January 2022, the regiment was reportedly deployed to Belarus in the context of the Ukraine crisis. [7]
It was reported by a Ukrainian source that the regiment was fighting in Bakhmut during the Battle of Bakhmut. [8]
The regiment reportedly sided with Prigozhin during the rebellion between Wagner group and Russian MoD. [9]

The 80th Separate Galician Air Assault Brigade ; Military Unit Number A0284) is an airmobile formation of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces. The brigade traces its history back to the 80th Airborne Regiment of the Soviet Union, formed in 1955 as part of the Soviet airborne's 7th Guards Airborne Division. Four years later, the regiment transferred to the 104th Guards Airborne Division. It participated in Operation Whirlwind in 1956 and Operation Danube in 1968. In 1979, the regiment was disbanded and used to form the 39th and 40th Separate Air Assault Brigades of the Soviet Army. The 39th Separate Air Assault Brigade became the 224th Training Center after transfer back to the Soviet airborne in 1990. The training center was taken over by Ukraine in 1992 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and became the 6th Separate Airmobile Brigade in 1995. In 1999, the brigade was reorganized into the 80th Airmobile Regiment, part of the 13th Army Corps. In 2013, the regiment was upgraded and became a brigade. The brigade fought in the War in Donbass, and was redesignated as an air assault brigade in 2015.
The 76th Guards Chernogov Red Banner Air Assault Division is a division of the Russian Airborne Troops based in Pskov. The division traces its lineage back to the 76th Guards Rifle Division, formed in March 1943 from the 157th Rifle Division for that division's actions during the Battle of Stalingrad. The division fought in the Battle of Kursk, the Battle of the Dnieper, Operation Bagration, the East Pomeranian Offensive, and the Berlin Offensive. Postwar, it was converted into an airborne division.

Yunus-bek Bamatgireyevich Yevkurov is a Russian colonel general and politician. For over 10 years he was the head of the southern Russian republic of Ingushetia, appointed by President Dmitry Medvedev on 30 October 2008. The following day, the People's Assembly of the Republic of Ingushetia, the republic's regional parliament, voted in favor of Yevkurov's appointment, making him the third Head of Ingushetia. He is a career soldier, paratrooper, and Hero of the Russian Federation who was involved in numerous conflicts where Russia played a key role, including Kosovo (1999) and Chechnya. On 22 June 2009, Yevkurov was seriously injured following a car-bomb attack on his motorcade in the city of Nazran.

The division was formed from the 103rd Guards Rifle Division, which fought as infantry during the final months of World War II in the Vienna Offensive following its formation in late 1944.

The 104th Guards Airborne Division is a division of the Soviet Airborne Troops and the Russian Airborne Forces. It was originally formed as the 11th Guards Airborne Division during World War II. In December 1944, the 11th Guards Airborne Division became the 104th Guards Rifle Division. On 7 June 1946, the division was renamed the 104th Guards Airborne Division. It was reduced to the 31st Guards Airborne Brigade in May 1998.
The 11th Guards Airborne Division was the name of two separate airborne divisions of the Soviet Airborne Troops. The division was first formed in late 1943 from three airborne brigades and did not see action before its conversion to the 104th Guards Rifle Division nearly a year later. The division was formed a second time in 1948 from a regiment at Ryazan and was disbanded in 1955.
The 38th Guards Airborne Corps was an airborne corps of the Soviet airborne. It was activated during World War II in August 1944 and became a rifle corps in December of that year. The corps fought in the Vienna Offensive and the Prague Offensive during the spring of 1945. After the end of the war, it was converted back into an airborne corps. The corps served at Tula until its 1955 disbandment when the Soviet airborne was reorganized.

The 45th Air Assault Brigade was a brigade of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces, formed twice. The brigade was first formed in 1993 from elements of the 299th Guards Airborne Regiment of the 98th Guards Airborne Division. Part of the 1st Airmobile Division, the brigade was disbanded. The brigade was reformed from an airmobile battalion in 2016. The brigade was disbanded again in 2020.
Yuri Viktorovich Kuznetsov was a Soviet and Russian military officer who held a number of posts in the Soviet and later Russian Armed Forces, reaching the rank of general-major. He served during the Soviet–Afghan War, receiving the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
On October 18, 1989, a Soviet Air Force Ilyushin Il-76, it was conducting a flight from Nasosnaya Air Base in SSR Azerbaijan to Zhovtneve Air Base in SSR Ukraine. It was carrying paratroopers from the 98th Guards Airborne Division, crashed into the Caspian Sea, killing all 57 people on board. It is the deadliest aviation accident to have occurred in Azerbaijan.
