2b S.Pacific is the debut solo album by New Zealand musician Che Fu. Released through BMG in October 1998, it reached No. 2 on the New Zealand charts.
Che Fu's decision to embark on a solo career came after being kicked out of the band Supergroove, of which he had been a member for eight years. [1] [2] He presented executives at record label BMG with his plans to sing on top of East Coast rap beats but was instead interpreted as wanting to make a reggae album. [2] Unsure as to how to promote reggae, the label sent him and fellow New Zealand rap musician DLT to New York to develop a more straightforward direction for the project. The two had previously collaborated on the New Zealand chart-topping song "Chains" and began work on more songs together after returning to New Zealand. However, amicable creative differences led to Che working with DJ Andy "Submariner" Morton for most of 2b S.Pacific instead. [1] [2] He did not aspire for a globally successful album as much as one that properly represented his country and culture. [2] The two worked on the album at Morton's small Auckland studio, The Hut, over a three-year period which included many arduous overnight sessions. [1] [2] Chong Nee and Che himself contributed to production alongside Morton. [1] [3] BMG ultimately released the album in October 1998, its title stemming from Che's desire for it to represent an address. [1] [2]
2b S.Pacific is primarily a hip-hop and R&B album but contains a variety of musical styles. [1] [2] "Chains" was released as a single in 1996 prior to the official album promotion campaign and contains lyrics against French nuclear testing. [1] The proper lead single, "Scene III," was released in 1998 and peaked at No. 4 in New Zealand. [1] [4] Double A-side "Without a Doubt" / "Machine Talk" was released the same year, "Without a Doubt" being a "slick R&B track" and "Machine Talk" having electro-funk stylings. [1] [5] It became the second single from 2b S.Pacific to top the New Zealand charts. "Waka" was released as the album's final single in 1999 and reached No. 6 in the New Zealand charts. Based around a hip-hop beat, the song features guest vocals from Teremoana Rapley and Cook Island drums. [1] Other tracks from the album which were not released as singles include the soul and funk-based "Hoodies" as well as the reggae album closer "Trust." [1] Che's upbringing in the Auckland suburb of Ponsonby and the influence of his father Tigilau Ness during that time, the Dawn Raids, and marijuana are among the topics discussed in the album's lyrics. At the 1999 New Zealand Music Awards, 2b S.Pacific and those involved with its creation garnered four nominations: Best Engineer (Morton), Best Producer (Che Fu and Morton), Album of the Year, and Single of the Year ("Scene III"), with the latter winning its category. [3] In the years since its release, Morton and former BMG A&R assistant Philip Bell have noted the impact of the album on the New Zealand hip hop scene. [2]

The music of New Zealand has been influenced by a number of traditions, including Māori music, the music introduced by European settlers during the nineteenth century, and a variety of styles imported during the twentieth century, including blues, jazz, country, rock and roll, reggae, and hip hop, with many of these genres given a unique New Zealand interpretation.
Che Kuo Eruera Ness, better known by his stage name Che Fu, is a New Zealand hip hop, R&B and reggae artist, songwriter and producer. A founding member of the band Supergroove, as a solo artist he has gone on to sell thousands of albums both in New Zealand and internationally. Che Fu is considered a pioneer of Hip hop and Pasifika music in New Zealand.
New Zealand hip hop derives from the wider hip hop cultural movement originating amongst African Americans in the United States. Like the parent movement, New Zealand hip hop consists of four parts: rapping, DJing, graffiti art and breakdancing. The first element of hip hop to reach New Zealand was breakdancing, which gained notoriety after the release of the 1979 movie The Warriors. The first hip hop hit single, "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang, became a hit in New Zealand when it was released there in 1980, a year after it was released in the United States. By the middle of the 1980s, breakdancing and graffiti art were established in urban areas like Wellington and Christchurch. By the early 1990s hip hop became a part of mainstream New Zealand culture.

Urban Pasifika is a New Zealand subgenre of hip hop, that developed primarily among Pasifika New Zealanders in South Auckland. Drawn from alternative hip hop and R&B influences, it was quickly blended with Pacific Island or Māori instrumentation and traditional songwriting and singing and rapping in a variety of Polynesian languages, such as Māori, Samoan, Niuean and Tongan. The genre's genesis in the 1980s blossomed into a unique, globally enrapturing cultural scene in its homeland of Auckland, especially in the next decade. Urban Pasifika is one of the most popular music genres to arise from New Zealand, and helped cement Auckland's reputation on the world stage as a major cultural centre, and the most ethnically Polynesian city in the world.

Dubious Brothers were a hip-hop duo based in Hamilton, New Zealand, formed in 2000. Members were Chris Macro and Tyna Keelan (guitars/bass/emcee). While New Zealand/Aotearoa hip-hop at the time was tending to contain a South Pacific influence, Dubious Brothers produced a more international style. This was largely due to the time Keelan had spent as a musician in Europe and Asia.

Kas Futialo, known by the stage name Tha Feelstyle, is a New Zealand hip hop artist of Samoan descent. His first album was Break It To Pieces in 2004. Tha Feelstyle was born in Samoa and moved to New Zealand in the 1980s. He raps in English as well as the Samoan language.
"Sensitive to a Smile" is a single from the New Zealand reggae band Herbs from the Sensitive to a Smile album. The single reached #9 in the New Zealand chart.
Bianca Miquela Landrau, known professionally as Bia, is an American rapper and singer who debuted on the Oxygen reality television series Sisterhood of Hip Hop. She signed to Pharrell's I Am Other record label, in partnership with RCA Records in 2014. Her first EP, Nice Girls Finish Last: Cuidado, was released in 2018. She is best recognized for featuring on the 2016 single "Safari" by J Balvin and "Best on Earth" by Russ in 2019. In early 2020, Bia signed a new record deal with Epic Records, releasing her second EP, For Certain, on December 11, 2020. The EP spawned the single "Whole Lotta Money", which later was released as a remix featuring Nicki Minaj and reached the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100.

Khalick Antonio Caldwell, better known as Stunna 4 Vegas, is an American rapper. He is currently signed to DaBaby's label Billion Dollar Baby Entertainment. His most popular singles are "Animal" and "Up the Smoke".
Tamia Monique Carter, known professionally as Flo Milli, is an American rapper. She rose to prominence after her songs "Beef FloMix" and "In the Party" went viral on the social media platform TikTok, eventually leading them to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. "Lose" is a song by British YouTube personality and rapper KSI and American rapper Lil Wayne from the deluxe edition of the former's second studio album, All Over the Place (2021). The song was written by the two artists alongside its producer Digital Farm Animals and songwriters Ivory Scott, S-X, David Snyder, Peter Jideonwo and Jochanan Samam. It was released for digital download and streaming by RBC Records and BMG on 6 August 2021 as the fifth single from the album. "Lose" is a hip hop track with elements of rock.
