The 36th Alabama Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War.
The 36th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Mount Vernon Arsenal on 12 May 1862. Robert Hardy Smith was colonel, Lewis Thompson Woodruff lieutenant colonel, and Thomas Hord Herndon major. The regiment spent a month there, and helped build defenses at Oven and Choctaw Bluffs. It was part of the garrison of Mobile, Alabama between August 1862 and April 1863, when it was sent to Tullahoma to join the Army of Tennessee. [1]
At Tullahoma, the 36th Alabama was brigaded under Henry DeLamar Clayton together with the 32nd and 58th Consolidated, 18th, and 38th Alabama Infantry Regiments. Clayton's brigade was part of Alexander P. Stewart's division. The regiment participated in the retreat of the army during the Tullahoma campaign and fought in the Battle of Chickamauga, in which it lost 125 men killed and wounded. The regiment suffered light casualties at Battle of Lookout Mountain but lost a large number in killed, wounded, and captured at the Battle of Missionary Ridge. [1]
The regiment encamped at Dalton with the army during the winter of 1863 to 1864. In the Atlanta campaign, it fought in the Battle of Rocky Face Ridge, Battle of Resaca, Battle of New Hope Church, the Battle of Atlanta. The 36th Alabama lost roughly 300 men in action after departing Dalton, and at the Battle of Jonesboro was involved in particularly heavy fighting, losing a quarter of those present. The regiment went with the army into Middle Tennessee during the Franklin–Nashville Campaign. It lost roughly 60 men at Battle of Nashville but was able to survive as an organized force following the battle. [1]
The regiment and the rest of James T. Holtzclaw's brigade was sent to Mobile to garrison Spanish Fort. In the Mobile campaign it lost 110 killed, wounded, and captured. Following the evacuation of Mobile, the regiment surrendered at Meridian, Mississippi in April 1865. Since the beginning of the Atlanta Campaign, where it had mustered 460 effectives, the regiment had lost 470 men and 21 officers, mostly killed and wounded. [1]

The 88th Illinois Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment from Illinois that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment mustered into service in September 1862 and was engaged at Perryville a month later. The unit subsequently fought at Stones River, in the Tullahoma campaign, at Chickamauga, at Missionary Ridge, in the Atlanta campaign, at Franklin, and at Nashville. The 88th Illinois especially distinguished itself at Stones River, Missionary Ridge, and Franklin. The regiment mustered out of service in June 1865.

Lewis Thompson Woodruff was an officer in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, but moved to Mobile, Alabama, in 1839. He entered Alabama state service on April 24, 1861, as captain of the "Mobile Rifles", which was designated Company K, 3rd Alabama Infantry. Woodruff was so well thought of that an offshoot of his company took his name, and the "Woodruff Rifles" fought in the 21st Alabama Infantry. The 3rd Alabama was organized at Montgomery, Alabama, and was the first Alabama regiment to make the trek to the seat of war in Virginia, where it mustered into Confederate service at Lynchburg on May 4.

The regiment was formed on November 7, 1862 when the 1st Missouri Infantry and the 4th Missouri Infantry were consolidated as a result of heavy battle losses in both units. The regiment served in several battles in the 1863 Vicksburg campaign, including a charge that almost broke the Union line at the Battle of Champion Hill. When the Siege of Vicksburg ended with a Confederate surrender, the regiment was captured and later exchanged. At Nashville in December 1864 most of the men were captured. The survivors were consolidated with several other units and fought at Spanish Fort in April 1865. The remnant surrendered in May 1865.

The unit began its existence as the 6th Louisiana Battalion in September 1861. The battalion was augmented to regimental strength in January 1862 at New Orleans and served during the war in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. The regiment fought at Shiloh, Farmington, and Perryville in 1862. After being reduced in numbers, the regiment was consolidated with the 13th Louisiana Infantry Regiment and served at Stones River, Jackson, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge in 1863. The 13th-20th Consolidated Louisiana fought at Resaca, New Hope Church, Ezra Church, and Nashville in 1864. The consolidation with the 13th Louisiana was discontinued in February 1865 and the regiment was re-consolidated with other units. It fought its final battle at Spanish Fort one month before surrendering in May 1865.

It served only in the Western Theater. The unit was created in November 1862 by combining the veteran but diminished 13th Louisiana and 20th Louisiana Infantry Regiments to form the consolidated regiment. The regiment fought at Stones River, Jackson, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge in 1863. The 13th-20th Louisiana fought at Resaca, New Hope Church, Ezra Church, Jonesborough, and Nashville in 1864. The consolidation was discontinued in February 1865 and the 13th and 20th Infantry Regiments were re-consolidated with other units.
