The category for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming was split into two categories: Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming, which recognizes shows catering to children ages 7 and older, and Outstanding Achievement in Children's Programming, for shows aimed at ages 7 and younger. [3]

It was first presented in 1985 with British television serial The Jewel in the Crown being the first recipient of the award.
