Author Pico Iyer was selected as the guest director of the event. [2] Telluride honored Renée Zellweger, Adam Driver, and Philip Kaufman as the Silver Medallion winners. [3] Sound studio Dolby Laboratories received the Special Medallion award. [4]

Daniel Frederick Ireland was an American-Canadian film producer and director. He was the co-founder of the Seattle International Film Festival. Ireland began executive-producing films for Vestron Pictures in the 1980s, his first being John Huston's final feature, The Dead (1987). He also executive-produced multiple films by director Ken Russell, such as Salome's Last Dance (1987), The Lair of the White Worm (1988), The Rainbow (1989), and Whore (1991).

The Two Popes is a 2019 biographical drama film directed by Fernando Meirelles and written by Anthony McCarten, adapted from McCarten's play The Pope which premiered at Royal & Derngate Theatre in 2019. Predominantly set in Vatican City in the aftermath of the Vatican leaks scandal, the film follows Pope Benedict XVI, played by Anthony Hopkins, as he attempts to convince Jorge Mario Cardinal Bergoglio, played by Jonathan Pryce, to reconsider his decision to resign as an archbishop as he confides his own intentions to abdicate the papacy.

The 45th Telluride Film Festival took place from August 31 to September 3, 2018 in Telluride, Colorado, United States.

The 47th Telluride Film Festival was scheduled to take place on September 4–7, 2020. In May 2020, it was announce that the festival would kick off a day earlier on September 3 for safety purposes. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Colorado, the festival announced its cancellation on July 14, 2020. Telluride was due to honor the Silver Medallion to Chloé Zhao, Anthony Hopkins, and Kate Winslet.

After the cancellation of the previous year's event due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Colorado, the festival required proof of vaccination, a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours and masks worn indoors to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The 49th Telluride Film Festival took place September 2–5, 2022. In June 2022, it was announced that the festival would receive the dissident Russian filmmakers Kantemir Balagov and Kira Kovalenko as Guest Directors "as key collaborators in the Festival's programming decisions, bringing new ideas and overlooked films to Telluride". In July 2022 it was announced that author, artist, graphic novelist and publisher Leanne Shapton would design the annual poster for the 49th edition.

The 50th Telluride Film Festival took place between August 31 and September 4, 2023, in Telluride, Colorado. Marking the fiftieth edition of the festival, Alfonso Cuarón, Adam Curtis, Ethan Hawke, Rachel Kushner, Steve McQueen, and Mira Nair, all of them past guests, were invited to return as Guest Directors. The poster for Telluride Film Festival's fiftieth anniversary, designed by Luke Dorman, was released in July 2023. Dorman is the Principal Graphic Designer at Meow Wolf.
