90 Minutes in Heaven is a 2015 Christian drama film directed by Michael Polish and starring Hayden Christensen, Kate Bosworth, Dwight Yoakam, Michael W. Smith, and Michael Harding. It is based on the bestselling novel by the same name. It is the first film by Giving Films, a sister company to retail chain Family Christian Stores, [5] and though the company announced plans to donate all profits from the film to charitable organizations, the poorly reviewed film showed a loss at the box office. Premise

Baptist minister Don Piper is involved in a horrific car crash, pronounced dead at the scene and covered by a tarp. [7] [8] Ninety minutes later, having been brought to a hospital, he returns to life and claims to have seen Heaven and visited with deceased relatives while there. [9] [10] [11]

Production

The project was shot in Atlanta, Georgia, [12] and the shooting finished in March 2015. [7] [13] [14] Since its publication, Don Piper's book was twice on the New York Times Best Seller list, was listed as a USA Today best-seller, [15] and has sold 7 million copies in 46 languages. [16]

The producers chose to stay as true to the book which inspired the film as possible: [17]

[ sic ]"I think a lot of people read books, especially true stories, and then the movie is not even close to the real story and they make up things. I told Don that I thought the story stood for itself and my commitment to him was that it would be true to the book, and be true period." – Rick Jackson [17]

Actress Kate Bosworth stated she "was amazed how Piper's story affects so many people" and that she felt blessed "to be a part of the movie's cast." [17] Filming began in January 2015, [9] [11] [18] and by March 8, 2015, filming had wrapped and the project went into post-production. [19]

90 Minutes in Heaven was released on DVD and Blu-ray on December 1, 2015. [20]

Reception

90 Minutes in Heaven has received negative reviews from critics. As of December 2020, the film holds a 26% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 23 reviews with an average rating of 4.6/10. [21] Metacritic gives the film a score of 28 out of 100, based on reviews from 9 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews". [22]

The film stars Jennifer Garner, Kylie Rogers, Martin Henderson, John Carroll Lynch, Eugenio Derbez, and Queen Latifah. Principal photography began in Atlanta, Georgia, in July 2015. The film was released on March 16, 2016. The movie was financially successful, becoming the 8th highest-grossing Christian film in the United States. Although critical reception was mixed, Garner's performance earned general praise.

The Mountain Between Us is a 2017 American survival drama film directed by Hany Abu-Assad and written by Chris Weitz and J. Mills Goodloe, based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Charles Martin. It stars Idris Elba and Kate Winslet as a surgeon and a journalist, respectively, who survive a plane crash, with a dog, and are stranded in the High Uintas Wilderness with injuries and harsh weather conditions. The film premiered on September 9, 2017, at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 6, 2017, by 20th Century Fox.

After Death is a 2023 American Christian documentary film written and directed by Stephen Gray and Chris Radtke. The film chronicles the stories of various near-death experience survivors, and features analysis of these events by authors and scientists as they try to determine what happens after people die. The film features interviews, as well as re-enactments of events, as the people in the documentary discuss what may happen after death. It received mixed reviews from critics.
