9 is the third solo album by Russian pop star Polina Gagarina. It was released 9 September 2016.
Towards the end of 2014, Gagarina announced that she had started working on a new album, which would be entirely in English. On 12 November 2014, she released the single "Day" which was created after a collaboration with Anton Belyaev, the frontman of Therr Maitz. In 2015, work on the album was postponed as Gagarina was preparing for the Eurovision Song Contest 2015, where she finished second with the song "A Million Voices". [1] In June 2015, Gagarina stopped working with Konstantin Meladze, with whom she had released a number of successful singles including "Spektakl Okonchen", "Nyet", "Navek" and "Shagay". [2]
The album was recorded in Moscow in the summer of 2016 at the studio of the label "Gazgolder". There Gagarina, with the head of the label, Basta, recorded the single "Golos". He introduced her to Roman Capella, who helped collaborate on the album. [3] The album was named 9 as it was a symbolic and happy figure for Gagarina, stating that the number is a symbol of one's spiritual maturity and that the number represents wisdom and enlightenment. Leading up to the album's release, "Tantsuy so mnoy" was released on 26 August. The day prior to the release, a live broadcast on VK took place, where Gagarina spoke about the details of the album. The following day, it was released on iTunes and Apple Music.
Alexey Mazhaev from InterMedia gave the album three stars out of five, stating that the album's release was met with great interest. He labelled it as experimental, but was dissatisfied with the fact that Gagarina had ignored the "spiritual requests of fans of Russian pop music" as the songs contain the active use of modern Western pop culture but few lyrics. [4] Boris Barabanov, from the Kommersant newspaper, noted that the album is split into two parts, Russian and English. He stated that the English side of the album contained more mature songs which could be played on radio stations all across Europe. However, he also says that none of the songs on the tracklist are massive hits. [5] The album also topped the Russian iTunes charts. [6]

Russia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 23 times since their debut in 1994. Russia won the 2008 contest with Dima Bilan performing the song "Believe". One of the most successful countries in the contest in the 21st century with a total of ten top five placements, Russia finished second with Alsou in 2000, Dima Bilan in 2006, Buranovskiye Babushki in 2012 and Polina Gagarina in 2015; third with t.A.T.u. in 2003, Serebro in 2007, Sergey Lazarev in 2016 and 2019, and fifth with Dina Garipova in 2013. In 2018, they failed to qualify for the final for the first time in their history. The Russian entry has been chosen through both internal selections and a televised national final titled Evrovidenie, with their most recent entry (2021) being chosen by the latter.
Anna Vladimirovna Sedokova is a Ukrainian singer, actress and television presenter. Sedokova came to prominence in 2002 as a member of pop girl group Nu Virgos, known in the CIS countries as VIA Gra and in which she was nicknamed Anya. Following two years in the "golden line-up" of the group, she pursued a solo music career in 2006. The singer released a string of singles until her debut album, Lichnoe, was released in 2016 to commercial success, peaking at number two in Russia.
Dima Nikolayevich Bilan is a Russian singer, songwriter and actor. He represented Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 with "Never Let You Go", finishing second, and he won the contest in 2008 in Belgrade, with the song "Believe". He has had several Russian number one hit records. He is sometimes referred to as "Russia's Iglesias" due to his similarity to the Spanish singer. In January 2023, Ukraine imposed sanctions on Dima for his support of 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Ruslan Fyodorovich Alekhno is a Belarusian-Russian singer who rose to popularity after winning Narodniy Artist – 2, the Russian version of Pop Idol. Alekhno received the Medal of Francysk Skaryna in 2019.
Serebro was a Russian girl group formed by their manager and producer Maxim Fadeev. Serebro was formed in 2007, consisting of Marina Lizorkina, Olga Seryabkina, and Elena Temnikova as a submitted proposal for consideration by Channel One Russia for the Eurovision Song Contest 2007. Serebro was selected to represent Russia at the 2007 Contest with the song titled "Song #1". They subsequently placed third at the contest, scoring a total of 207 points. Serebro was then officially signed to Fadeev's record label Monolit Records, and in 2012, the group had additional releases produced by Sony Music Entertainment and Ego Music. In 2009, Lizorkina announced her departure from the group; she was subsequently replaced by Anastasia Karpova. Karpova left the group in 2013 and was replaced by Dasha Shashina, who left in 2016. Temnikova left the group in 2014 due to health reasons, and Polina Favorskaya, who replaced Temnikova, left the group in 2017. Favorskaya was later replaced by Morgunova. In 2019, the line-up Olga Seryabkina, Katya Kischuk, and Tatiana Morgunova, the last one to include the last original member, has been replaced by Elizaveta Kornilova, Marianna Kochurova and Irina Titova.
Polina Sergeyevna Shelepen is a figure skater. She is a two-time JGP Final silver medalist and a two-time Russian national junior silver medalist. She competed for Russia through 2012.
Vasiliy Mikhaylovich Vakulenko, better known by stage name Basta, and also known as Noggano, is a Russian rapper, producer and radio host. In January 2023, Ukraine imposed sanctions on Vasiliy for his support of 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Alisa Alekseyevna Kozhikina is a Russian singer. In 2014, she became the first person to win The Voice Kids Russia. Later that year she represented Russia at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Malta with her song "Dreamer."
