The Alabama Public Service Commission,commonly called the PSC,was established by an act of the Alabama Legislature in 1915 to primarily replace the State Railroad Commission. The PSC's responsibility was expanded in 1920 to include regulating and setting rates that utility companies charge their customers for electricity. The legislature expanded the PSC's responsibilities in later years to include those companies that provide gas,water,and communications,as well as transportation common carriers such as trucking and air carriers. The PSC effectively determines the rate of profits that most of these companies are allowed to earn. However,some of its traditional responsibilities have passed to the federal government with the passage of the Federal Aviation Act of 1994 and the Federal Communications Act of 1996.
Kirk Schuring is an American politician serving as a member of the Ohio Senate. He served as interim Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives,following the resignation of Speaker Cliff Rosenberger. Rosenberger resigned amid revelations he was under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was previously a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1993 to 2002,and from 2011 to 2018. Schuring also previously served in the Ohio Senate from 2003 to 2010. He was the Republican nominee for Ohio's 16th congressional district in the 2008 election. In 2018,Schuring was re-elected to the Ohio Senate,where represents the 29th district.

The winners of this election served in the 101st General Assembly,with seats apportioned among the states based on the 2010 United States Census. The Democratic Party has held a House majority since 1997. The inauguration of the 101st General Assembly occurred on Wednesday January 9,2019. The Democrats flipped 8 seats while Republicans flipped 1 seat,resulting in a net gain of 7 seats for the Democratic caucus.
