A. Lakshman Rao is the former Chief Operating Officer [1] of Wipro Technologies. [2] Rao joined Wipro's Information Technology business as a founder member in 1980 and contributed significantly towards building a R&D team. From 1993 to 1996, he worked as Vice President (Technical) at Wipro Systems and played an important role in building competence in Client/Server and Object technologies. During this period, he was instrumental in building a number of business practices from scratch. Testing services, business intelligence, data warehousing and e-Enabling are some of them. As group vice president and chief technology officer of Wipro from 1996 to 1999, he implemented ISO 9000 compliant quality processes across the Software Divisions of Infotech Group. He has also driven the SEI CMM initiative enabling Wipro to become the first SEI CMM Level 5 Software Services Company in the world. In Oct 2000, Rao took over the leadership of Telecom and Internetworking Solutions Division [3] [4] and steered the business through multifold growth to its present prominent position. [5]

In June 2005, the then CEO of Wipro Technologies, Vivek Paul quit, [6] and Rao was appointed the COO. [7] [8] From June 2005 to September 2008 he worked as the chief operating officer, with the responsibility for Product Engineering business(about one Billion Dollar revenues), CIO & CTO functions, Admin & Facilities and Japan & China Geographies sales & Operations. [9] [10] A L Rao also worked as an Advisor to Wipro Technologies from October 2008 to September 2009. In September 2009, Rao retired from Wipro after 29 years of service. He is currently an independent advisor to a few IT services companies. [11] [12] On 9 June 2011, A L Rao joined Trianz board of directors. [13] [14]

Prior to Wipro, he worked in Electronics Corporation of India Ltd. from 1973 to 1980 and was associated with the development of operating systems and compilers for ECIL computers. Rao has delivered the keynote speech at the 2nd World Congress on Software Quality in Japan in 2000. He was also a guest speaker at the Project Management Conferences held in Japan and the US. He has been elected a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering for distinguished contribution to Computer Science & Engineering. Rao did his MSc and PhD (in Nuclear Physics) from Andhra University, India.

Business process outsourcing to India refers to the business process outsourcing services in the outsourcing industry in India, catering mainly to Western operations of multinational corporations (MNCs).

On-demand outsourcing is a trend in outsourcing wherein major internal operations processes of a company are being shifted to a provider that is paid for by the number of transactions involved. The business transferring the services pays for the quality, special skills and the competence of the service provider's employees. There has been an expansion of the outsourcing concept to include on-demand outsourcing. This refers to the process undertaken by business managers to adopt an outsourcing policy that ensures that the specific business and supplies including technical manpower are accessed as the need arises. It focuses a business strategy to improve its goods and services and to drive a business towards quality improvement.

The software industry in Karnataka state in India has become one of the main pillars of the state's economy. Karnataka stands first among all the states of India in terms of revenue generated from software exports, accounting for 42% share of all software exports from the country during the financial year of 2022-2023. The total exports of Karnataka was Rs 3.28 lakh crore. Karnataka's capital city Bangalore has the sobriquet of Silicon Valley of India, with total IT exports worth US$ 53 billion during the financial year 2021–22, employing 1 000 000 people directly and 3 000 000 lakh indirectly. Though most software companies are located in Bangalore, some have settled in other cities like Mysore, Mangalore, Belgaum and Hubli in Karnataka. The infrastructure required for setting up software industries in Karnataka is provided by STPI. The software industry in Karnataka includes companies dealing with various fields like telecommunication, banking software, avionics, database, automotive, networking, semiconductors, mobile handsets, internet applications and business process outsourcing. Currently, out of total IT exports, 95% is from Bengaluru alone and the other Karnataka cities contribute just 5%.

According to estimates, these engineering colleges and universities consistently generate about 50 per cent of the human resource requirements for the IT and ITES industry was being sourced from the state, particularly from Chennai. The total employment in the Tamil Nadu’s technology sector crossed the one million mark in the quarter ended June 2022.
