A. L. Steiner (born 1967 in Miami, Florida) is an American multimedia artist, author and educator, based in Brooklyn, New York. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] Her solo and collaborative art projects use constructions of photography, video, installation, collage, and performance. Steiner's art incorporates queer and eco-feminist elements. She is a collective member of the musical group Chicks on Speed; and, along with Nicole Eisenman, is a co-curator/co-founder of Ridykeulous, a curatorial project that encourages the exhibitions of queer and feminist art.

Biography

A. L. Steiner was born in 1967 in Miami, Florida. Steiner received a Bachelor of Arts in 1989 in Communication from George Washington University. [6]

Steiner was Visiting Assistant Professor and M.F.A. Program Director the Roski School of Art and Design, University of Southern California in 2014. In 2016, she was appointed Critic at the Yale School of Art [7] and currently serves as the school's Senior Critic in Film/Video. [8] She is also faculty in Bard College's MFA photography program. [9]

Steiner is the recipient of the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists award (2017), [10] the 2015–2016 Berlin Prize, [5] and the 2015 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant. [11]

Art work

More real than reality itself (2014)

More real than reality itself was a "multichannel video installation" for the Whitney Biennial of 2014. [12] [13] The piece aimed to examine political activism and documentary films, especially their use of linear narratives. The film was originally exhibited alongside the installation Cost-benefit analysis, a "collage of images of bodies and the environments they inhabit that amplifies the exchanges and encounters staged in the film." Steiner said of the piece,

[It is] a conduit to viewing other subjective histories [which has become] a platform for questioning intentionality and the relationship [in order to give] documentary or archival forms - a fragile and precarious place for both the object and subject. [14]

Community action center (2010)

From 2007 to 2010, A. L. Steiner and A. K. Burns composed Community Action Center. It is a sixty-nine-minute socio-sexual video which utilizes erotics to express the personal sexual and political lives of the people in their community, with a largely queer focus. The video was filmed in New York State and Los Angeles. [2] [15]

In 2013, Burns and Steiner took the video on a fourteen city, ten state screening tour entitled Community Action Center or BUST!: The X-Cuntry Summer Tour. The tour culminated in October 2013, with an evening performance at The Kitchen, New York. The video was accompanied by live performances by Justin Vivian Bond, Nick Hallett, Sam Miller, K8 Hardy, and other artists from the Community Action Center soundtrack. [16] [17]

Greater New York (2010)

Steiner was one of 68 artists to participate in MoMA PS1's quinquennial exhibition, Greater New York. [18] Her contribution, entitled Angry, Articulate, Inevitable, consisted of a collage of Steiner's photographs spanned across several walls. [19]

1 Million Photos, 1 Euro Each (minimum order) (2005)

1 million Photos, 1 Euro Each is a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling collage installed at the John Connelly Presents' project room. It consists of photographs (mostly of women but also of men) and sexual nature shots of varying size. There is also a small television playing a rapid-fire, stop-action loop of the photographs on the wall and others, with text (often the title of the work) between them. [20] [21]

Activism

W.A.G.E.

A. L. Steiner is a co-founder of Working Artists and the Greater Economy (W.A.G.E.) a New York-based activist group founded in 2008. W.A.G.E advocates that artists, performers and independent curators working with US institutions should be compensated for their work. [22]

Huma Bhabha is a Pakistani-American sculptor based in Poughkeepsie, New York. Known for her uniquely grotesque, figurative forms that often appear dissected or dismembered, Bhabha often uses found materials in her sculptures, including styrofoam, cork, rubber, paper, wire, and clay. She occasionally incorporates objects given to her by other people into her artwork. Many of these sculptures are also cast in bronze. Bui was the recipient of the 2021 American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts. He lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Michelle Grabner is an artist, curator, and critic based in Wisconsin. She is the Crown Family Professor of Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she has taught since 1996. She has curated several important exhibitions, including the 2014 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art along with Anthony Elms and Stuart Comer, and FRONT International, the 2016 Portland Biennial at the Oregon Contemporary, a triennial exhibition in Cleveland, Ohio in 2018. In 2014, Grabner was named one of the 100 most powerful women in art and in 2019, she was named a 2019 National Academy of Design's Academician, a lifetime honor. In 2021, Grabner was named a Guggenheim Fellow by The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Nayland Blake is an American artist whose focus is on interracial attraction, same-sex love, and intolerance of the prejudice toward them. Their mixed-media work has been variously described as disturbing, provocative, elusive, tormented, sinister, hysterical, brutal, and tender.

K8 Hardy is an American artist and filmmaker. Hardy's work spans painting, sculpture, video, and photography and her work has been exhibited internationally at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Tate Modern, Tensta Konsthalle, Karma International, and the Dallas Contemporary. Hardy's work is included in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art. She is a founding member of the queer feminist artist collective and journal LTTR. She lives and works in New York, New York.

Jacolby Satterwhite is an American contemporary artist who creates immersive installations. He has exhibited work at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, the New Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, both in New York City, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia. In addition to MoMA, his work is in the public collections of the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Seattle Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Kiasma, and the San Jose Museum of Art. Satterwhite has also served as a contributing director for the music video that accompanied Solange's 2019 visual album When I Get Home and directed a short film accompaniment to Perfume Genius's 2022 studio album Ugly Season.

A.K. Burns is a New York-based interdisciplinary visual artist, working with video, installation, sculpture, collage, poetry and collaboration whose works address trans-feminist issues. Burns is currently a fellow at Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. She graduated from Rhode Island School of Design and went on to receive an MFA in sculpture from Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College. Burns has been full-time faculty at Hunter College's Graduate Department of Art and Art History from 2015 to 2016 and a mentor at Columbia University. She has also taught at Parsons the New School for Design, Cooper Union and Virginia Commonwealth University. Burns was one of the first residents at the Fire Island Art Residency. Burns was a 2015 Creative Capital Awardee in the Visual Arts category and is represented by Calicoon Fine Arts, Galerie Michel Rein and Video Data Bank.

Ryan Ponder McNamara is an American artist known for fusing dance, theater, and history into situation-specific, collaborative performances. Sable Elyse Smith is an interdisciplinary artist, writer and educator based in New York. Smith works in photography, neon, text, appropriated imagery, sculpture, and video installation connecting language, violence, and pop culture with autobiographical subject matter. In 2018, Smith was an Artist-in Residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem. Bradley Eros is an experimental film director, actor, curator, poet, and performance artist who also makes Musique concrète sound collages, music videos, photographs, live projection performances, works on paper and art objects.

Ruba Katrib is a Syrian-American curator of contemporary art. She has served as Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs at MoMA PS1 since 2017. From 2012 until 2017, Katrib was Curator at SculptureCenter in New York. Prior to this post, she worked first as Assistant Curator and then as Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami. She is best known for exhibitions highlighting women artists and global issues.
