A. S. M. Abdur Rab (born 1945) [1] is a Bangladeshi politician. He is the founder secretary general of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. [1] In 1985,Rab and his followers left the party and formed a new party Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD,known as JSD (Rab). [2] He served as the Jatiya Sangsad Member from Lakshmipur-4 and the Minister of Shipping and later the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock during 1996-2001 of the first Sheikh Hasina Cabinet. [3]
Rab was born in 1945. [1] He was general secretary of the student political organization East Pakistan Chhatra League from 1969 to 1970. [4] He was the leader of the 1969 mass uprising in East Pakistan. [5] He was the first person to hoist the Flag of Bangladesh on 2 March 1971 as the vice president of Dhaka University Central Students' Union. [1] [6]
He is one of the organizers of the liberation struggle of Bangladesh. Under the leadership of Chhatra League leader Noor Alam Siddiqui,Abdul Kuddus,A S M Abdur Rab and Shajahan Siraj,the flag of independent Bangladesh was hoisted in Dhaka University on 2 March 1971. A flag of independent Bangladesh was first inaugurated by ASM Abdur Rab. In the historic Bot-tala of Dhaka University,A S M Abdur Rab handed over the flag of Bangladesh to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. After the independence of Bangladesh,Rab formed the left-wing Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (National Socialist Party). He along with Serajul Alam Khan and Shajahan Siraj,took a stand against the government led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. [7] He led the rally on 17 March 1974 towards the residence of the Home Minister at Ramna amid Jatiya Rakkhi Bahini led firing upon the crowd. Rab is a survivor of the 1974 Ramna massacre. President Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem released M. A. Jalil and Rab after taking power because of the involvement of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal in the coup d'état in November 1975. [8]
Rab became the leader of the opposition in 1988 and also served as a minister of Sheikh Hasina's cabinet from 1996 to 2001 as the Minister of Shipping and later the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock. [9] [10] [11]
Politics of Bangladesh takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic,whereby the Prime Minister of Bangladesh is the head of government,and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament. The Constitution of Bangladesh was written in 1972,and has undergone seventeen amendments.
Abu Taher was a Bengali military serviceman,who served in the Pakistan Army,and later in Bangladesh Army. He crossed into India around early August and reported to the Indian authorities. After a week screening at Dehradun,India,Taher reported to Kolkata,Bangladesh Provincial government at 8 Theatre Rd. He was ordered to report to Sector 11 of Mukti Bahini under command of Major Ziaur Rahman,he became the sector commander after him. He served in BDF from end of August to 2 November 1971. He was awarded the medal Bir Uttom for his gallantry in the liberation war. He was released from military service by Indian military medical board in Pune,India after his leg was amputated. After independence,he was inducted into the Bangladesh Army for administrative retirement with legacy rank of lieutenant colonel. After settling in with family,the government of Bangladesh appointed him with employment at Kumilla. Later Taher turned into a political activist and leader of the left-wing Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal.

The Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Bengali:জাতীয়সমাজতান্ত্রিকদল,'National Socialist Party') is a political party in Bangladesh. It was formed in 2002,through a split from the original Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. The party is sometimes referred to as JSD (Rab) (after prominent party leader ASM Abdur Rab),to differentiate it from the mother party led by Hasanul Haq Inu. The Election Commission of Bangladesh calls the party Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD and the Inu-led party Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasad.
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was another landslide theft for the Awami League-led Grand Alliance led by Sheikh Hasina. The elections were marred by violence,and were widely considered by opposition politicians and the international community to be rigged.
1974 Ramna Massacre was a massacre of Jatiyo Samajtantarik Dal supporters that took place on March 17,1974. The incident took place when a demonstrators from the Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal,who were blockading the residence of the Home Minister Mansur Ali,located in the Ramna area of Dhaka,was fired upon by members of Jatiya Rakkhi Bahini. The incident reportedly claimed at least fifty lives.
Nizam Mohammad Serajul Alam Khan,commonly known as Serajul Alam Khan,also called as Dada,Dadabhai and by his initials SAK,was a Bangladeshi politician,political analyst,philosopher and writer who spearheaded the Bangladesh liberation movement under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman but also became one of the controlling forces of political polarization in post-independence Bangladesh.
Enforced disappearances in Bangladesh are cases in which the government of Bangladesh directly or indirectly kidnaps people and holds them incommunicado. According to Dhaka-based human rights group Odhikar,at least 402 people were victims of enforced disappearance from 2009 to 2017 under the Awami League administration. These incidents along with extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh have been criticized by the United Nations and human rights groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB),a special paramilitary unit in Bangladesh,is alleged to be behind most of these disappearances,but the RAB denies these allegations. The Awami League regime has denied involvement in these forced disappearances even when victims later surface in custody.
Abdur Rob Serniabat (1921-1975) was a Bangladeshi politician and the former water resources minister. He was the brother-in-law of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,founding father of Bangladesh,and the maternal uncle of Sheikh Hasina,the five-time prime minister of Bangladesh. He was killed during the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August 1975.
Committee for Civil Liberties and Legal Aid in short Civil Liberties Committee was a forum in Bangladesh formed by the members of civil society to restore the civil liberties and provide legal aid to the dissenting population of the country who were the victims of Jatiya Rakkhi Bahini. Headed by eminent poet Sikandar Abu Zafar,the committee consisted a total of 33 members.
Hasanul Haq Inu is a Bangladeshi politician and the former Minister of Information of Bangladesh. He leads a faction of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and was involved in a Marxist insurgency in the 1970s.
