Shajahan Siraj (1 March 1943 –14 July 2020) [1] was a Bangladeshi politician who served as the vice chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). As a student,he was involved with the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was one of the founders of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. He was a member of Jatiya Sangsad representing the Tangail-4 constituency.
Siraj attended Government Saadat College,where he was twice elected vice president of the student council. He served as the general secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra League,the student organization of the Awami League,from 1970 to 1972. [1] He was a leader of the Mukti Bahini and one of the leaders of Bangladesh liberation. Siraj was one of the designers of the Bangladesh flag. Siraj read the manifesto of Bangladesh independence on 3 March 1971,in front of millions of people in the presence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He served as the acting General Secretary and also the president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD). [2]
Siraj won election to parliament five times from Tangail-4 constituency. He served as a minister,for the Government of Bangladesh,during 1991 and 2001 BNP's tenure. [3] During his tenure as the environment minister, [4] the use and production of plastic shopping bags (polythene bags) were banned in Bangladesh,3-stroke scooters were withdrawn from the road,and social tree plantation turned into a movement.
In 2007,arrest warrants were issued for Siraj in connection with thirteen charges of tax evasion. [5] He was sentenced to thirteen years in jail,and his wife three. [3] That conviction was overturned in 2010. [6]
Siraj was married to Rabeya Siraj,a women's movement leader,president of the BNP's Dhaka city women's front,and a member of the BNP national executive committee. [5] Together they have a daughter,Sarwat Siraj,and,Rajiv Siraj,a son. Sarwat is a practising advocate at the Bangladesh Supreme Court. Rajiv is a member of board of directors of One Group.[ citation needed ]
Siraj died on 14 July 2020 at a hospital in Dhaka after suffering from cancer. [6]
Abu Taher was a Bengali military serviceman,who served in the Pakistan Army,and later in Bangladesh Army. He crossed into India around early August and reported to the Indian authorities. After a week screening at Dehradun,India,Taher reported to Kolkata,Bangladesh Provincial government at 8 Theatre Rd. He was ordered to report to Sector 11 of Mukti Bahini under command of Major Ziaur Rahman,he became the sector commander after him. He served in BDF from end of August to 2 November 1971. He was awarded the medal Bir Uttom for his gallantry in the liberation war. He was released from military service by Indian military medical board in Pune,India after his leg was amputated. After independence,he was inducted into the Bangladesh Army for administrative retirement with legacy rank of lieutenant colonel. After settling in with family,the government of Bangladesh appointed him with employment at Kumilla. Later Taher turned into a political activist and leader of the left-wing Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal.
The Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal is a political party in Bangladesh. The party was founded by Serajul Alam Khan. It party was dominant during the 1972–1975 Bangladesh insurgency.
A. S. M. Abdur Rab is a Bangladeshi politician. He is the founder secretary general of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. In 1985,Rab and his followers left the party and formed a new party Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD,known as JSD (Rab). He served as the Jatiya Sangsad Member from Lakshmipur-4 and the Minister of Shipping and later the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock during 1996-2001 of the first Sheikh Hasina Cabinet.

1974 Ramna Massacre was a massacre of Jatiyo Samajtantarik Dal supporters that took place on March 17,1974. The incident took place when a demonstrators from the Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal,who were blockading the residence of the Home Minister Mansur Ali,located in the Ramna area of Dhaka,was fired upon by members of Jatiya Rakkhi Bahini. The incident reportedly claimed at least fifty lives.

The 7 November 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état was a coup d'état launched by left-wing army personnel in collaboration with left-wing politicians from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. The coup resulted in the death of Major General Khaled Mosharraf,who only 3 days prior,led a coup against those involved in the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. During the coup,Ziaur Rahman was freed from house arrest,enabling him to seize power and become president.

The party joined the Awami League-led 14-Party Alliance. Ahead of the 2018 Bangladeshi general election,the Awami League allowed the party to field its candidate Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal to contest the Chittagong-8 seat on their election symbol. In 2022,the party left the 14-Party Alliance.
