A. T. M. Hamidul Hossain Tariq is a retired Major of the Bangladesh Army and veteran of the Bangladesh Liberation War. [1] [2]

Early life

Tariq was born in 1951 in Bogra and studied at Bogra Zilla School. [3] [4] His father, Abdul Hamid, was a deputy superintendent of police. [5]

Career

Tariq joined the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 when he was 19 years old and a university student. [3] He was motivated to join the war following the 7 March Speech of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. [5] He was trained in India. [6] He fought in sector-7 in the Mukti Bahini. [3] He commanded a Mukti Bahini camp during the war. [7] His unit liberate Fulbari Upazila from the Pakistan Army on 1 December 1971. [1] [8] After India joined the war, his unit joined the 6th Guard Regiment of the Indian Army led by Lieutenant Colonel V. K. Datta. [9] For his role in the war, he was awarded Bir Bikrom, third highest gallantry award of Bangladesh, and he was the youngest recipient of the award. [3] He was bullet hit eight times during the war. [10] After the Pakistan Army surrendered on 16 December 1971, Tariq entered Bogra on a tank on 18 December. [8]

Tariq joined Bangladesh Army in 1974. [6] He was a second lieutenant stationed in Comilla Cantonment during the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. [11] Tariq retired from Bangladesh Army as major in 1989. [3] He joined Padma Oil Company, a state owned company, after retirement. [3]

Tariq has written extensively on the liberation war; writing 35 books on the war. [3] He was awarded the National Kabi Shamsur Rahman Memorial Award for his literary works. [5] He is a director of the Dhaka Mercantile Co-Operative Bank Limited. [3] [12] He signed a statement in 2020 calling for the punishment of those who vandalized a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with other veterans of Bangladesh Liberation War. [13] He was the president of Chittagong University Alumni Association '82. [14]

Abdul Kader Siddique is a Bangladeshi politician. He served as a Mukti Bahini member and organizer of the Bangladesh Liberation War. He fought with an estimated 17,000-strong guerrilla force in the Tangail region against the Pakistan Army. The army was called Kaderia Bahini. Suhrawardy Udyan formerly known as Ramna Race Course ground is a national memorial located in Shahbagh, Dhaka. It is named after Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy. Originally it served as the military club of the British soldiers stationed in Dhaka. It was then called the Ramna Race Course and later Ramna Gymkhana. After the end of colonial rule, the place – sometimes referred to as Dhaka Race Course – was used for legal horse racing on Sundays.

The Swadhin Bangla Biplobi Parishad was an armed underground student political group secretly organized in 1961 by Serajul Alam Khan, a key founder of Bangladesh, that worked to wage an armed secessionist struggle against Pakistani rule and achieve the independence of East Pakistan as "Bangladesh".

The Jatiya Rakkhi Bahini was a Bangladeshi para-military force formed in 1972 by the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman government.

Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni was a Bangladeshi politician. He was one of the nephews of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the founding father of Bangladesh. He was the founder of Mujib Bahini Bangladesh Liberation Force-BLF one of the major guerrilla forces of the Bangladesh Liberation War and also the founder of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, the youth wing of Bangladesh Awami League.

Kader Bahini was an independent militia created during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, the other being Mukti Bahini. It was named after its leader, Kader Siddique.

Gonobahini was the armed wing of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal. The group was mainly composed of former Mukti Bahini members from the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

The Mukti Bahini, also known as the Bangladesh Forces, was the guerrilla resistance movement consisting of the Bangladeshi military, paramilitary and civilians during the Bangladesh Liberation War that transformed East Pakistan into Bangladesh in 1971. They were initially called the Mukti Fauj.

G. M. Mushfiqur Rahman Bir Uttom (1966–1989) was a lieutenant in the Bangladesh Army. Rahman was one of two military officers who were awarded Bir Uttom, the other being Brigadier Jamil Uddin Ahmad who died while trying to prevent the assassination of President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, after the end of Bangladesh Liberation War.

Z Force, also known as Tura Brigade, was the first military brigade of Bangladesh Forces formed during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 under Major Ziaur Rahman along with the consent of the revolutionary government of Bangladesh in exile. The brigade was formed with the 1st, 3rd and 8th Battalion of East Bengal Regiment on 7 July 1971. It is the first ever complete brigade formed during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.

Muktijoddha Sangsad a non-political welfare association of the combatants during the Bangladesh Liberation War formed on 13 February 1972. The organisation has a football club, Muktijoddha Sangsad KC, named after itself.

S. M. Imdadul Hoque was a Bangladesh Army officer who fought and died in the Bangladesh Liberation war. He was posthumously awarded Bir Uttom, the second highest military honor in Bangladesh.

The 3 November 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état was a military coup d'état led by Major General Khaled Mosharraf to remove the assassins of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from power.

The NAP-Communist Party-Students Union Special Guerrilla Forces was an armed force active in the Bangladesh Liberation War. It was organized jointly by the National Awami Party (Muzaffar) (NAP), Communist Party of Bangladesh and the East Pakistan Students Union. Mohammad Ziauddin, BU is a retired Bangladeshi military officer, who was the Commanding Officer of the 1st East Bengal Regiment during the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was awarded the Bir Uttom, the country's second highest gallantry award for his outstanding bravery in the Liberation War. His certificate number was 22.

Anwar Ul Alam Shaheed was a colonel of the Bangladesh Army, secretary in the ministry of foreign affairs, diplomat, and ambassador of Bangladesh to Spain and Bahrain. He had served in the Kaderia Bahini and Jatiya Rakkhi Bahini.

Maleka Khan is a Bangladeshi social worker and activist for the rights of the Birangana, women raped during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.
