AIDAnova is a cruise ship built by Meyer Werft GmbH in Papenburg, Germany under contract from Carnival Corporation for AIDA Cruises. The first of the new Excellence-class ships, she was launched on 21 August 2018 and delivered on 12 December 2018.

General information

The ship is the first cruise ship in the world that can operate completely using liquefied natural gas (LNG), like the cruiseferry Viking Grace. [7] [8] [9]

AIDAnova has four dual-fuel hybrid engines, which can use either LNG or traditional fuel oil. [7]

Her delivery was marred by delays; complications arose from her engineering being the first-of-its-kind for a ship of her scale. In October 2018, the first postponement was announced, cancelling all scheduled preview cruises. [10] A small fire had also broken out during its construction in the shipyard, delaying her sea trials. [10] Her maiden voyage was then scheduled for 2 December 2018 from Hamburg. [10] Later, in November 2018, a second postponement was announced. [11] Her sea trials were scheduled to begin on 16 November 2018 and all work was scheduled to be completed by 30 November 2018. [11] AIDAnova was delivered on 12 December 2018 and her maiden voyage was on 19 December 2018 for a seven-day cruise from Santa Cruz de Tenerife around the Canary Islands and Madeira. [12]

As of September 2019, AIDAnova was sailing on cruises around the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. [5] In 2022 it has been sailing in Northern Europe, the port of Nordfjordeid in Norway is visited on every cruise. [13]

AIDA Cruises German cruise line

AIDA Cruises is a German cruise line founded in the early 1960s and organized as a wholly owned subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc since 2003. Based in Rostock, Germany, AIDA Cruises caters primarily to the German-speaking market; as seagoing "club resorts", AIDA ships have on-board amenities and facilities designed to attract younger, more active vacationers. As of January 2022, the cruise line operates 14 ships.

The Excellence class, including the sub-classes Helios class, XL class and Excel class, is a class of cruise ships ordered by Carnival Corporation & plc for its subsidiary brands AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, P&O Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line. The ships are being constructed by Meyer Werft at their shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, and Meyer Turku at their shipyard in Turku, Finland. The first, AIDAnova, entered service for AIDA Cruises in 2018.

The Edge class is a class of cruise ships operated by Celebrity Cruises, a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. The class is constructed by Chantiers de l'Atlantique of France. After Carnival finalized the ship's order with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in December 2016, the vessel had her keel laid in January 2018 and she was formally delivered in October 2019 as the last Vista-class vessel in the Carnival fleet. Measuring 133,868 GT and 323 m long, she is the largest of Carnival's three Vista-class vessels. Since her debut in December 2019, she has been homeported at the Port of Long Beach and sails week-long itineraries to the Mexican Riviera.

At 185,010 gross tonnage (GT), she is the largest ship commissioned for and to ever operate for Costa, and is the sixth-largest cruise ship in the world, as of 2019. Costa Smeralda is also the second cruise ship in the world to be fully powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), making Costa the second cruise line to operate a ship running on LNG, after sister brand, AIDA Cruises, became the first in 2018. Costa Smeralda is set to have a sister ship, Costa Toscana, that is scheduled for delivery in 2021. Her inaugural cruise sailed on 21 December 2019.

Celebrity Apex is an Edge-class cruise ship operated by Celebrity Cruises, a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Constructed at Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, she is the second vessel in the company's Edge class of ships, following the delivery of her sister ship, Celebrity Edge, in 2018. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, her debut sailing was from Athens on June 19, 2021 to the Greek Islands.

<i>Spirit of Discovery</i> (2019) Cruise ship operated by Saga Cruises

Spirit of Discovery is a 58,250 GT cruise ship operating for Saga Cruises. Built by Meyer Werft, the ship was delivered on 24 June 2019 and began operations on 10 July 2019. Upon delivery, she became Saga's first ever new-build ship. She is Saga's largest ship to ever operate in its history, a title she will share with her sister ship, Spirit of Adventure, after she was delivered in September 2020.

<i>MSC Seashore</i> Cruise ship to operate for MSC Cruises beginning in 2021

MSC Seashore is a Seaside EVO-class cruise ship built for MSC Cruises at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. As of August 2021, she became the lead ship of MSC's Seaside EVO class, a sub-class of the Seaside-class of ships built with larger dimensions. She will be joined by sister ship named MSC Seascape scheduled for delivery in November 2022.

Icon of the Seas is a cruise ship under construction for Royal Caribbean International and will be the lead ship of the Icon class. She is scheduled to enter service in 2023.

<i>Viking Octantis</i>

The Viking Octantis is a Polar Class 6 purpose-built expedition ship completed in December 2021 for Viking Expeditions Cruises, a subdivision of Viking Cruises. The ship has a capacity of 378 passengers with 189 staterooms. The ship's primary routes include Antarctica and the Great Lakes where the ship carries out scientific research during its cruises. The ship will be joined by an identical sister ship Viking Polaris in mid 2022.
