The APBA Gold Cup (originally known simply as the Gold Cup, a speedboat race) is an American hydroplane boat race, named for the American Power Boat Association. It is now run as part of the H1 Unlimited season. [1] First run in 1904, it is the oldest trophy in motorsports. [2]
Starting in 1904, the Gold Cup consist of three heats, and starting in 1918 the heat distance was 30 statute miles. [3] In 1963 the number of heats was increased to four, but the total distance was reduced to 60 statute miles. [4] In 1976, the Unlimited Racing Commission adopted a winner-take-all format for all its races including the APBA Gold Cup. [5] In 1981 the total number of heats was reduced to three with the total distance being reduced to 45 statute miles. [6] Since 1983 the Gold Cup has been competed at various total distances ranging from 36 statute miles to 52.5 statute miles. [7]
The driver with the most Gold Cup victories is Chip Hanauer, with 11 victories. Dave Villwock is second, with 10, and Bill Muncey is third, with eight. [8]

1960: Heat 1A completed. Second half of first heat was abandoned when Gale V crashed in Heat 1B. By rule, two heats were required to be completed for an official meeting for series championship purposes. Round abandoned and cancelled by APBA because of high winds.
2008: Heats 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B completed. Round abandoned after crash in Heat 3A and high winds, declared No Contest by APBA. American Boat Racing Association (now H1 Unlimited) declared the round official, counting all heat races and qualifying results for eries championship purposes since nine boats started the first heat race. With two fully completed heats, U-5 FormulaBoats.com (Jeff Bernard, driver) declared round winner with 850 points (fifth in qualifying, first in heat 1B, and first in heat 2B) for National Boat Championship purposes. Hydroplane racing is a sport involving racing hydroplanes on lakes, rivers, and bays. It is a popular spectator sport in several countries.
William Edward Muncey was an American hydroplane racing legend from Detroit, Michigan. The International Motorsports Hall of Fame and hydroplane historian Dan Cowie described Muncey as "without question, the greatest hydroplane racer in history." Muncey was nicknamed "Mr. Unlimited" and won 62 races, which was the most races in the history of the sport until Dave Villwock broke his record in 2011.
H1 Unlimited is an American Unlimited Hydroplane racing league that is sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association (APBA). Until 2009, the series was known as ABRA Unlimited Hydroplane, in turn renamed from APBA Unlimited Hydroplane in 2004. The H1 Unlimited season typically runs from July through September, consisting of five races.
The Indiana Governor's Cup is an H1 Unlimited hydroplane boat race held annually on Independence Day weekend on the Ohio River in Madison, Indiana. Madison has hosted the Madison Regatta annually since 1951, although the race was also contested in the 1930s. The race inspired a Hollywood motion picture released in 2005, titled Madison which starred actor Jim Caviezel.The Regatta was part of the APBA Gold Cup in 1979, 1980. 2019, & will be contested in 2021.
The Detroit Hydrofest is a H1 Unlimited hydroplane boat race held in August on the Detroit River in Detroit, Michigan.
The HAPO Columbia Cup is an H1 Unlimited hydroplane boat race held each July on the Columbia River in Columbia Park, Tri-Cities, Washington. The race is the main attraction of the annual Water Follies festivities. With the exception of 2020, Tri-Cities has hosted a race consecutively since 1966.
The Seafair Cup, is an H1 Unlimited hydroplane boat race held annually in late July and early August on Lake Washington in Seattle, Washington. The race is the main attraction of the annual Seafair festival. Seattle has hosted the Seafair Cup consecutively since 1951. The event was part of the APBA Gold Cup for the following years: 1951 to 1955, 1957 to 1959, 1962, 1965, 1967, 1974, 1981, and 1985.

The San Diego Bayfair Cup is an H1 Unlimited hydroplane boat race held annually on Mission Bay in San Diego, California. The race is the main attraction of the annual San Diego Bayfair festival. Founded in 1964, the race was run as part of the APBA Gold Cup in 1969, 1970, 1987, and 1989.

The 2015 H1 Unlimited season is the sixtieth running of the H1 Unlimited series for unlimited hydroplanes, sanctioned by the APBA. It will be the first time since 2009 that the series will have no sanctioning from the UIM.
The 2015 APBA Gold Cup, the 111th running of the APBA Gold Cup race and the 50th running of the local event, was held on July 24, 25, and 26, 2015 on the Columbia River in Kennewick, Washington. Contested over eight heats and a final on the 2.5-mile (4 km) oval, it was the first points-payin race of the 2015 H1 Unlimited season after the original first race, the Indiana's Governors Cup, was converted into an exhibition event after numerous delays. Jimmy Shane won the race, his second consecutive and all-time APBA Gold Cup win, the first win of the season, and the third APBA Gold Cup win for Miss Madison. J. Michael Kelly finished second, while Cal Phipps, Brian Perkins, and Scott Liddycoat rounded out the top five.
The Guntersville Lake Hydrofest is an H1 Unlimited hydroplane boat race held annually in June on Guntersville Lake in northern Alabama near Guntersville.
The 2016 H1 Unlimited season is the sixty-first running of the H1 Unlimited series for unlimited hydroplanes, sanctioned by the APBA.
The 2021 H1 Unlimited season is the sixty-fifth running of the H1 Unlimited series for unlimited hydroplanes, sanctioned by the APBA. The 2020 season would have been the sixty-fifth running but that season was cancelled because of COVID-19.
