A Counterfeit Santa Claus is an American drama film directed by Hardee Kirkland from December 1912. The now lost film was distributed by the Selig Polyscope Company. [1]
The Mullins' situation is bleak. The couple sits at an empty table in their poorly furnished apartment. The two children are sitting on the floor next to them, with their bedding pulled over their shoulders to keep them warm. The small family's woes increase as the landlord wants them evicted because of their rent arrears. Mike Mullin goes looking for work, but is repeatedly harshly rejected. Mike tries to beg on the street, but no one gives him anything.
Mike stops in front of a house with obviously wealthy residents and decides to steal what he cannot otherwise get. He enters a room where the two children of the household had hung their stockings in anticipation of presents. The parents had decorated the room for Christmas with a tree and prepared a Santa Claus costume for the presents. Mike takes Santa's big sack and throws in the silver cutlery from the dining room. He then takes some presents from the tree for his own children and puts on his Santa Claus costume.
The children wake up and come down to take a curious look at Santa. Mike sends them both back to bed and tells them to be quiet. The father hears the muffled voices and hides behind the curtains with his revolver drawn. Mike has come to his senses and wants to leave the bag with the loot behind. He attaches a piece of paper to it, but before he can take off the costume he is surprised by the host at gunpoint. The father demands that the message be released. The note says “My wife and children are starving. I came into the house to steal. But I want to go as an innocent man and continue to trust in God's help."
Mike tells the landlord the whole story. He writes him a check and promises to give him a job after Christmas. When Mike arrives at his apartment laden with food and gifts for the children, he is greeted by his happy wife and children. The previously barren and poor home is now a real home with warmth and security. [2]
A Counterfeit Santa Claus is 1009 feet long and was published on December 25, 1912. [3] The film is lost.
A film with the same title released in 1911 by the Selig Polyscope Company is mentioned in the literature. The director is said to have been Otis Turner, and the actors are Hobart Bosworth, Olive Cox, Bebe Daniels and Lillian Leighton. This information can be traced back to the work The Braff Silent Short Film Working Papers by the American author Richard Braff, published in 2002. Braff is considered unreliable among cineastes and he does not adequately cite his sources. If this film existed at all it probably was not finished and was not released. [4]

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a 1910 American silent fantasy film and the earliest surviving film version of L. Hobart Van Zandt Bosworth was an American film actor, director, writer, and producer. Bosworth began his career in theater, eventually transitioning to the emerging film industry. Despite a battle with tuberculosis, he found success in silent films, establishing himself as a lead actor and pioneering the industry in California. Bosworth started his own production company, Hobart Bosworth Productions, in 1913, focusing on Jack London melodramas. After the company closed, Bosworth continued to act in supporting roles, surviving the transition to sound films. He is known as the "Dean of Hollywood" for his role in shaping the California film industry. In 1960, Bosworth was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the film industry.
Motion pictures featuring Santa Claus constitute their own subgenre of the Christmas film genre. Early films of Santa revolve around similar simple plots of Santa's Christmas Eve visit to children. In 1897, in a short film called Santa Claus Filling Stockings, Santa Claus is simply filling stockings from his pack of toys. Another film called Santa Claus and the Children was made in 1898. A year later, a film directed by George Albert Smith titled Santa Claus was created. In this picture, Santa Claus enters the room from the fireplace and proceeds to trim the tree. He then fills the stockings that were previously hung on the mantle by the children. After walking backward and surveying his work, he suddenly darts at the fireplace and disappears up the chimney.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a 1908 silent horror film starring Hobart Bosworth, and Betty Harte in her film debut. Directed by Otis Turner and produced by William N. Selig, this was the first film adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novel Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The screenplay was actually adapted by George F. Fish and Luella Forepaugh from their own 1897 four act stage play derived from the novel, causing a number of plot differences with the original source. Despite Stevenson's protests, this film became the model which influenced all the later film adaptations that were to come.

Hardee Kirkland was an American film actor and director of the silent era who appeared on stage. Kirkland was born in Savannah, Georgia, the son of former Confederate Brigadier General William Whedbee Kirkland and the older brother of the actress Elizabeth Kirkland, who performed as Odette Tyler. He appeared in more than 40 films between 1915 and 1925. He also directed more than 30 films between 1912 and 1914. He died in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 60.

Otis Bryant Thayer was an American actor, director, producer and owner of silent era film production companies. Before his film career he was a stage actor and operatic comedian. By 1910, he piloted the Chicago based Selig Polyscope Company filming westerns on locations at Canon City. He founded the Art-O-Graf film company of Denver in 1919. And by 1920, he was the president of the "Superior Foto Play Company."

The Christmas Chronicles 2 is a 2020 American Christmas comedy film directed and produced by Chris Columbus, who wrote the screenplay with Matt Lieberman. A sequel to the 2018 film The Christmas Chronicles, it features Kurt Russell reprising his role as Santa Claus. Also reprising their roles are Goldie Hawn, Darby Camp, Judah Lewis, and Kimberly Williams-Paisley, with new cast members Julian Dennison, Jahzir Bruno, Tyrese Gibson, Sunny Suljic, Darlene Love, and Malcolm McDowell. The film had a limited theatrical release before moving to Netflix on November 25, 2020.
Richard Morris (1862–1924) was an American opera singer, stage performer, and silent film actor. Morris was born on January 30, 1862, in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He was 62 when he died in Los Angeles, California on October 11, 1924. Between 1912 and 1924, Richard Morris acted in 59 films.
