Aandiyur Uthangarai is a village in Uthangarai taluk, Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu, India.

Uthangarai taluk is a rural taluk of Krishnagiri district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The headquarters is the town of Uthangarai.

Krishnagiri district is a district in the north western part of the state of Tamil Nadu, in India. This district is carved out from Dharmapuri District by 2004. The municipal town of Krishnagiri is the district headquarters. In Tamil Nadu, e-Governance was first introduced at Krishnagiri district under the National e-Governance Project (NEGP) in revenue and social welfare departments on a pilot basis. The district is one of the largest producers of mangoes in India. As of 2011, the district had a population of 1,879,809 with a sex-ratio of 958 females for every 1,000 males.

History

In 1300 CE, Aandiyur was a forest inhabited only by Siddhars. Hence the place was called Siddha Madam, a name which over time evolved to become Aandi madam and eventually Aandiyur.

Siddhar

The Siddhar in Tamil tradition is a perfected individual, who has attained intellectual powers called siddhi by constant practice of certain educational disciplines.

Demographics

In the 2001 Indian census, Aandiyur had 1,979 inhabitants, 1,007 male and 972 female. [1] For the 2001 census Uthangarai taluk, and Aandiyur, were in Dharmapuri district, as Krishnagiri district was not formed until 2004. [2]

It is the first district created in Tamil Nadu after the independence of India by splitting it from then-Salem district on 02 October, 1965. The other major towns in the district are Harur, Palacode, Karimangalam, Pennagaram and Pappireddipatti. Dharmapuri District is one of the major producers of mango in the state, fine quality granite is found in the district. It is also one of the main sericulture belts in the state. Around 30 percent of the district's area is under forest cover. Cauvery river enters Tamil Nadu through this district.

In the 2011 census, Aandiyur reported a decreased population of 1,403. [3]

Mazhanadu was divided into two major divisions namely Mel-Mazhanadu and Keezh-Mazhanadu (Eastern-Mazhanadu). The Keezh-Mazhanadu was once ruled by Kolli Mazhavan and his successors. The Keezh-Mazhanadu was well known by its water resources. It was mentioned in a Tamil poem.
