Aayololo is a Bus Rapid Transit System, was inaugurated on the 25th of November 2016, [1] in Ghana which is operational in Accra the Capital. Bus Rapid Transit system are special because particular lines are dedicated for the buses which allows them to move faster through traffic, along their routes.

Aayalolo system Started in 2016, it started work from Accra to Amasaman and Accra to Ofankor. It was initially planned as a Bus Transit System with dedicated lanes, but because these lanes were not provided it was renamed Quality Bus System (QBS). [2]

Aayalolo is a ga word which means "still moving on".

Currently Aaylolo operates from Accra to Amasaman, Adentan to Accra, Kasoa to Accra and Ofankor to Accra. [3]

Regulation

The BRT is under the Urban Transport Project (UTP) of the Ministry of Roads and Highways. [4]

Funding

The projected is funded by four parties, The World Bank, The Agence Francaise de Development (AFD), The Government of Ghana and the Global Environment Facility Trust Fund and was implemented by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Department of Urban Roads. The initial cost estimate was $95 million. [4]

Controversies

On Monday, 24 February 2020, Drivers of Aayalolo Bus Rapid Transit System began a sit-down strike. They claim their salaries have not been paid by their employers for seven months. [5]

However the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive's GAPTE claims its not true and they have been paid. [6]

Challenges

The bus system was meant to use e-card as payment instead of cash, however management of the company could not provide e-cards to customers after they ran out. [7]

The line operates primarily along Interstate 35W from downtown Minneapolis through Richfield and Bloomington before terminating in Burnsville, Minnesota. The City of Vaughan in Ontario, Canada offers a complex transportation infrastructure, which includes highways, public transit, regional roads, municipality-funded roads, and train services.

The Delhi BRTS was a bus rapid transit system in Delhi. The first route opened in 2008 ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which were held in the city. The project was well used but has been criticised for the difficulty of access to the bus platforms, which are in the middle of the road, for lack of enforcement and for the effect it has had on other motor traffic. A legal challenge was defeated in 2012. The Aam Aadmi Party Government had announced the scrapping of bus rapid transit system and it was dismantled in 2016, because of traffic congestion and accidents.

Bangkok BRT

The Bangkok BRT is a bus rapid transit system in Bangkok, Thailand. Of five routes that were originally planned, only one line has been operating since 2010, with the other routes cancelled. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced the whole system might be cancelled at the end of April 2017 due to low ridership and financial losses, however a subsequent opinion survey carried out by the BMA found there was a demand for the service to be retained. In March 2017 the Bangkok Governor announced the service would continue, with increased ticket prices and changed operator to Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited.

Bus rapid transit in Brazil

The first bus rapid transit in Brazil (BRT) was built in 1974 in the city of Curitiba by the then mayor, architect Jaime Lerner, and became the second BRT in the world. The goal of the system is to provide high quality rail transit service to customers and at a comparable cost to that of a bus transit. Curitiba's success inspired the implementation of similar plans in more than 100 cities around the world, including the Brazilian cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre, Manaus, Goiânia, Aracaju, Salvador, Recife, and Brasília.

BRT Sunway Line

The BRT Sunway Line is a bus rapid transit (BRT) line that is part of the Klang Valley Integrated Transit System servicing the southeastern suburbs of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. This line is operated by Rapid Bus and was introduced in 2015 to service the high-density areas of Sunway and Subang Jaya, replacing an earlier proposal plan for the now defunct Sunway Monorail extension.

Rainbow Bus Rapid Transit System

Rainbow BRTS is a bus rapid transit system in the city of Pune. The system is operated by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML). The infrastructure has been developed by the Pune Municipal Corporation & Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, Pune. The project currently envisages 113 km of dedicated bus corridors along with buses, bus stations, terminals and intelligent transit management system.

TransPeshawar or Peshawar BRT is a bus rapid transit system in Peshawar, capital of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. TransPeshawar BRT system consists of two parts: the first encompasses an east-west corridor served by 32 stations on a dedicated lane for exclusive use by buses, while the second part consists of a network of feeder routes in which buses can enter and exit the system to travel on city streets. The system was inaugurated on August 13, 2020, and is the fourth BRT system in Pakistan.

Ghanaian government response to the COVID-19 pandemic Actions by the Ghanaian government on COVID-19 pandemic

The Government of Ghana initially responded to the virus through a nationwide disinfection and fumigation exercise which began in April 2020. In order to curb the spread of the virus, the government enforced lockdowns, aggressive contact tracing, public bans and social measures such as encouraging the wearing of face masks. By April, it began the gradual reopening of the country; lifting all lockdowns while maintaining protocols such as social distancing. Throughout the pandemic, the government partnered with the private sector in order to roll out economic reliefs and recovery programs as a result of the impact of the pandemic on Ghana's economy. There was also an expansion of medical facilities and the improvement of testing logistics.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education in Ghana

Most governments decided to temporarily close educational institutions in an attempt to reduce the spread of COVID-19. As of 12 January 2021, approximately 825 million learners are affected due to school closures in response to the pandemic. According to UNICEF monitoring, 23 countries are implementing nationwide closures and 40 are implementing local closures, impacting about 47 percent of the world's student population. 112 countries' schools are open.

Durham–Scarborough bus rapid transit (DSBRT) is a future bus rapid transit corridor proposed by Metrolinx for the eastern part of the Greater Toronto Area in Southern Ontario, Canada. The 36-kilometre (22 mi) bus corridor will run from downtown Oshawa to Scarborough Town Centre in Toronto, mainly along Durham Region Highway 2 in Durham Region and Ellesmere Road in the Scarborough district of Toronto. Dedicated bus lanes will be used where feasible. Buses of the Toronto Transit Commission, Durham Region Transit and GO Transit would use the busway. Metrolinx has indicated that the BRT could be easily converted to LRT in the future if required.
