Abdon Balde Jr. (born September 12, 1946) is a contemporary Bicolano writer in Bikol, Filipino, and English. [1] He was awarded as one of the Outstanding Bikolano Artists for 2009 in Literary Arts category in Naga City, and Southeast Asian Writers Awards for the Philippines in Thailand last 2009. [2] He is one of the directors in Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL). [3] In 2012, he was named Poet laureate of Albay. He was born in Busac, Oas, Albay.

Central Bikol commonly called Bikol Naga, also known simply as Bikol, is an Austronesian language spoken by the Bicolanos, primarily in the Bicol Region of southern Luzon, Philippines. It is spoken in the northern and western part of Camarines Sur, second congressional district of Camarines Norte, eastern part of Albay, northeastern part of Sorsogon, San Pascual town in Masbate, and southwestern part of Catanduanes. Central Bikol speakers can be found in all provinces of Bicol and it is a majority language in Camarines Sur. The standard sprachraum form is based on the Canaman dialect.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bicol Express</span> Filipino stew with chili peppers

Bicol Express, known natively in Bikol as sinilihan, is a popular Filipino dish which was popularized in the district of Malate, Manila but made in traditional Bicolano style. It is a stew made from long chili peppers or small chili peppers, coconut milk/coconut cream, shrimp paste or stockfish, onion, pork, ginger and garlic. The dish was termed by Laguna resident, Cely Kalaw, during a cooking competition in the 1970s in Malate, Manila. The name of the dish was inspired by the Bicol Express railway train that operated from Tutuban, Manila to Legazpi, Albay. The widely-known name for this dish in the Bicol Region of the Philippines was identified as gulay na may lada, which is currently one of the vegetarian variants of the Bicol Express dish. As time progressed, variants of the Bicol Express dish expanded with seafood, beef, pescatarian, vegetarian, vegan, and other versions. The preparations for these dishes vary according to the meat present within the dish. In terms of nutritional value, the original version of the Bicol Express dish is beneficial in protein but unhealthy in regards to its high levels of saturated fats and cholesterol. The dish has moved into food processing and commercial production so that it can be sold conveniently and stored for a longer period of time.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Laing (food)</span> Filipino dish

Laing, is a Filipino dish of shredded or whole taro leaves with meat or seafood cooked in thick coconut milk spiced with labuyo chili, lemongrass, garlic, shallots, ginger, and shrimp paste. It originates from the Bicol Region, where it is known simply as pinangat. Laing is also a type of ginataan, and thus may also be referred to as ginataang laing. Laing is commonly eaten as a vegetable side to complement meat or fish side dishes known as ulam in Filipino, which is normally paired with boiled white rice.

Located on its slope is Tiwi Geothermal Power Plant, one of the first geothermal energy plant commissioned in the country.

Ofelia Manibog Samar-Sy is a Filipino physician in Internal medicine and Cardiology, medical educator, Medical Director of Ibalong Medical Center in Legazpi City, Albay, in May 2014 she was appointed Dean, College of Medicine of Bicol Christian College. She is currently the Interim Dean of Bicol University College of Medicine. Samar-Sy is a board member for several Filipino NGOs. She is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (2013) as well as a life member of the Philippine Medical Association and the Philippine College of Physicians.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ibalon</span>

Ibalon, or Ibalong, is the ancient name of the Bicol Region in the Philippines. The center of settlement is believed to be either beside the Bicol River at the present-day Libmanan, Camarines Sur or in Magallanes, Sorsogon, Philippines, renowned as one of the first Spanish settlement in the island of Luzon. At some point, the name Ibalong was also been used by the Spanish to refer to the entire Bicol Peninsula, and to some extent the entire island of Luzon.

The Ibálong, also known as Handiong or Handyong, is a 60-stanza fragment of a Bicolano full-length folk epic of Bicol region of Philippines, based on the Indian Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. The epic is said to have been narrated in verse form by a native poet called Kadunung.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Camilo Jacob</span>

Camilo Jacoby Soledad was a Bicolano hero, martyr and revolutionary. He was also known as one of the 11 among the Fifteen Martyrs of Bicol who were executed in Bagumbayan (Luneta), now Rizal Park, by Spanish authorities at the end of 19th century during the Philippine revolution.
