The Dagombas or Dagbamba are a Gur ethnic group of northern Ghana,numbering more than 3.1 million people. The term Dagbamba is also used to refer to other descendants of Naa Gbewaa including the Mamprusi and Nanumba. They inhabit the Northern Region of Ghana in the Guinea savanna region. They speak the Dagbani language which belongs to the Mole-Dagbani sub-group of the Gur languages. There are more than 3 million native speakers Dagbani. The Dagomba are historically related to the Mossi people. The Mossi Kingdoms were founded by Yennenga,a daughter of the founder of the Dagbon Kingdom. The Mohi/Mossi now have their homeland in central present-day Burkina Faso. Aside The Mossi,the Dagombas are the progenitors of the Bouna state of Ivory Coast,and the Dagaaba states of Upper West Region of Ghana. The homeland of the Dagomba is called Dagbon and covers about 20,000 km2 in area.
The Northern Region is one of the sixteen regions of Ghana. It is located in the north of the country and was the largest of the sixteen regions,covering an area of 70,384 square kilometres or 31 percent of Ghana's area until December 2018 when the Savannah Region and North East Region were created from it. The Ghana News Agency (GNA) is the official news agency of the country of Ghana. It was founded in 1957 by President Kwame Nkrumah,Mr. Donald Wright,who was seconded by the Reuters News Agency set up the Ghana News Agency and in 1961 President Nkrumah appointed Dr. Goodwin T. Anim as the GNA's first General Manager. Some viewed the organizatioin as part of a "network of coercive and partisan institutions," in a concerted effort to present a more favorable view of the country to the outside world and to control the flow of information nationally. The New York Times reported in 1964 that most of the agency's news came from Reuters;the agency functioned as a gatekeeper in that it disseminated international news to the Ghanaian press,and deleted any international news critical of the Ghanaian leadership immediately,thus preventing such news from reaching the country's newspapers and radio stations. Until the rise of the Pan African News Agency,the GNA was considered one of the most efficient news agencies in Africa,spreading what Nkrumah called the "clear ideology of the African Revolution" and contributing to "African and Ghanaian emancipation."
