Abin Joseph is a Malayalam language short story writer from Kerala, India. his short story collection Kalliasseri Thesis won many awards including the Kerala Sahithya Akademi Geetha Hiranyan Endowment (2017) and Yuva Puraskar (2020) by Sahitya Akademi. [1] [2]

Biography

Abin was born on 26 October 1990, to Joy and Mary at Keezhpally near Iritty, Kannur district. [3] [4] Abin's family was migrated to Kannur from the Kottayam Kuruppanthara region in the 1960s. [3] After schooling from Idaveli Government LP School and Velimanam St. Sebastian's Higher Secondary School, he graduated from Iritty M.G. College with a degree in physics and a postgraduate degree in journalism from Don Bosco Arts & Science College, Kannur. [5] He worked as Sub Editor of Mathrubhumi Periodicals. [5]

While in sixth grade, Abin participated in a story competition and won second place. [6] That was his first story. As he lived in a place of migration, which has deep political roots, most of his stories has traces of local politics and immigration. [4] He lived for some time at Anchampeedika near Kalliasseri, which provided inspiration for his story Kalliasseri Thesis. [6]

He is known for his stories like Kalliasseri Thesis, Sahayatrika, [7] Prathinayakan, Pelayakkurish Satyam, Arival Chuttika Nakshatram [8] etc. Political intrigue, satirical take on revolution, the issues of caste, migration and belonging, female identity and liberation are some of the themes he explored. He has published articles in Mathrubhumi, [9] Manorama, [10] [11] Asianet [12] and Indian Express [13] online portals.

Abin said in an interview that his work experience as a journalist has benefited his writing. [6] "The journalist's eye is instrumental in finding the plot and getting the story started and ended well," he said. Media experience will also help to edit stories carefully, he added.

Gracy is a Malayalam author. Her first collection of short stories, Padiyirangippoya Parvati, was published in 1991. Her awards include the Lalithambika Antharjanam Award (1995), the Thoppil Ravi Award (1997), the Katha Prize for the Best Malayalam Short Story (1998) and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award (2000). Her major works are Narakavaathil, Randu Swapna Darsikal, Kaveriyude Neru, Eezbu Penkathakal, Panikkannu and a collection, Gracyude Kathakal. Her stories have been translated into English, Hindi, Tamil and Oriya. She was the head of the Malayalam department, Al-Ameen college, Edathala, Aluva.

Subhash Chandran born in Kerala, India, is a Malayalam novelist, short story writer and journalist best known for the 2010 novel Manushyanu Oru Aamukham. His stories "Vadhakramam", "Sanmargam", "Parudeesa Nashtam" and "Gotham" have been adapted into films. He is the only writer to get Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for both his debut story collection (2001) and debut novel (2011).

K. R. Meera is an Indian author and journalist, who writes in Malayalam. She was born in Sasthamkotta, Kollam district in Kerala. She worked as a journalist in Malayala Manorama but later resigned to concentrate more on writing. She started writing fiction in 2001 and her first short story collection Ormayude Njarambu was published in 2002. Since then she has published five collections of short stories, two novellas, five novels and two children's books. She won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 2009 for her short-story, Ave Maria. Bhagyalakshmi is an Indian dubbing artist, actress, and activist. She works primarily in Malayalam Film Industry and has dubbed for more than 800 actresses and more than 4,700 films in Malayalam cinema; most notably for actresses Shobana, Samyuktha Varma, and Urvashi. Bhagyalakshmi published her autobiography, Swarabhedangal, which received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Biography and Autobiography.

C. V. Balakrishnan is an Indian writer of Malayalam literature. His novels and short stories encompass the emotional issues related to mass culture, sexual politics, fate of the marginalised and institutionalised religions. An author of more than 60 literary works along with a few film scripts and film criticisms, his best known work is the novel Ayussinte Pusthakam. He received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award thrice and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Book on Cinema in 2002 for Cinemayude Idangal. In 2014, he won the Padmaprabha Literary Award.

The 2012 Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award was announced on 11 July 2013. The Akademi fellowships and the awards for overall controbution were announced in October 2013.

Thomas Joseph was an Indian writer of Malayalam literature. He received Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Story in 2013 for his work, Marichavar Cinema KaanukayaaNu. He was also a recipient of SBT Literary Award, Delhi Short Story Award, K. A. Kodungallore Award, V. P. Sivakumar memorial Keli Award and the Children's literary institute Award. S. Hareesh is an Indian writer, translator and screenwriter of Malayalam literature and cinema. He is best known for his short stories and his acclaimed but controversial debut novel, Meesa, which explores caste in Kerala in the mid-20th century. The novel, initially serialized in the Mathrubhumi weekly, was withdrawn after protests by right-wing Hindutva groups and caste-community organizations for “maligning Hindu women and temple priests.”. It was later published as a full novel by DC Books. Hareesh is the recipient of several honours including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Novel and the Geetha Hiranyan Endowment of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi. In November 2020, the English translation of Meesa, titled Moustache, was selected for the JCB Prize for Literature, the Indian literary award with the highest prize money.

Kerala Sahitya Akademi Fellowship is an honour of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, given to writers of Malayalam literature by inducting them as the distinguished members of the Akademi.

C. L. Jose, in full Chakkalakal Lonappan Jose, is an Indian playwright of Malayalam literature. One of the pioneers of popular Malayalam theatre and a former chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, Jose is the author of 36 plays, 75 one-act plays, one children's play and Ormakalkku Urakkamilla, his autobiography. He is a recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Drama, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Overall Contributions, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship and S. L. Puram Sadanandan Puraskaram of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi.

Amal Pirappancode is a Malayalam language novelist, short story writer, illustrator, graphic novelist and C cartoonist from Kerala, India. Sangeetha Sreenivasan is a novelist, children's writer, translator, Guitarist and teacher from Kerala, India. She writes in Malayalam and English and also translates into both languages. In 2020, she received Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation for Upekshikkappetta Dinangal, the Malayalam translation of the novel The Days of Abandonment by Italian author Elena Ferrante. She is the daughter of writer activist Sarah Joseph.
