Bilateral foreign relations were established between the Republic of Abkhazia and Nauru on 14 December 2009, in the aftermath of the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, which saw Abkhazia gain partial international recognition.

Recognition and diplomatic relations

Nauru became the fourth United Nations member to recognize and establish diplomatic relations with Abkhazia as an independent state on 15 December 2009. [1] [2] [3] On 15 December 2009 a recognition agreement between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia, Sergei Shamba, and the Minister of Trade and Foreign Affairs of Nauru, Kieren Keke was signed.

Former President Sprent Dabwido claimed Nauru's recognition of Abkhazia was because the people "really need independence". On the other hand, observer Dr. Malakai Koloamatangi said that he believed Nauru recognised Abkhazia in order to gain financial support from Russia. [4]

Meetings between officials

Representatives of Nauru were present as observers for the presidential elections in Abkhazia on 26 August 2011. [5]

On 18 September 2012, Abkhazia's Ambassador to Russia Igor Akhba met with Nauru's President Sprent Dabwido when the latter visited Moscow and discussed future cooperation. [6] On 7 November 2013, Akhba met in Moscow with Dabwido's successor Baron Waqa and discussed agreements to be signed between Abkhazia and Nauru. [7]

On 22 August 2014, Nauru's Speaker of Parliament Ludwig Scotty was awarded the order Akhdz-Apsha second degree by Acting President Valeri Bganba. [8]

Between 18 and 20 April 2015, a delegation from Nauru visited Abkhazia headed by Vice President David Adeang. It discussed the signing of three agreements on cooperation and the appointment of an honorary consul of Nauru in Abkhazia. [9] [10] [11]

On 27-29 September 2015, Ludwig Scotty, the Speaker of Parliament of Nauru paid a visit to Abkhazia on the 23rd anniversary of Victory Day of Abkhazian War 1992–1993 in Sukhumi, Abkhazia.

On 29 September 2016, during a visit to Abkhazia of a delegation led by Nauru's Speaker of Parliament Cyril Buraman, the two countries signed a Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. [12]

After paid visit and meeting with the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergei Lavrov in Sochi on 22 November 2017, H.E. Baron Waqa, then President of Nauru made a visit to Abkhazia on 22-23 November 2017. He was the first non-Russian head of state to visit the Republic of Abkhazia. [13] Waqa and Khajimba issued had some important agenda's talks and discussed at this moment. Both nations agreed to increase mutual relationship in the higher level both of Republic of Nauru and the Republic of Abkhazia.

On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the independence of Nauru on 31 January 2018, a delegation from Abkhazia (together with a delegation from South Ossetia) paid a visit on this occasion on 27 January–4 February 2018. There were several agenda talks from Abkhazia officials and Nauru officials. Minister of Foreign Affairs Abkhazia, Daur Kove meets with then-President Nauru, Baron Waqa. [14] Several bilateral documents were signed between the Abkhaz Foreign Minister and the Government and Parliament of Nauru on 1 February 2018 between Said Kharazia and Cyril Buraman.

Sergei Shamba is a senior politician from Abkhazia. He is currently a member of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia and Chairman of United Abkhazia. He was Prime Minister of Abkhazia under President Sergei Bagapsh from 13 February 2010 until 27 September 2011. Between 1997 and 2010 he had been Minister for Foreign Affairs under both Bagapsh and his predecessor Vladislav Ardzinba, with only a half-year interruption in 2004. Shamba has twice unsuccessfully participated in presidential elections, in 2004 and 2011. He has been a staunch proponent for dialogue between Abkhazia and Georgia.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Foreign relations of South Ossetia</span>

The Republic of South Ossetia – the State of Alania is a partially recognized state in the South Caucasus that declared independence from Georgia during the South Ossetia War (1991–1992). At the time, the Soviet Union had only just recently collapsed. Since 1991, South Ossetia has sought recognition as a sovereign state from the international community. South Ossetia is considered by most of the international community to be a part of Georgia.

Abkhazia and South Ossetia are separatist regions of Georgia in the Caucasus. Most countries recognise them as part of Georgia, while Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, and Syria regard them as independent. Russia's initial recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occurred in the aftermath of the Russo-Georgian War in 2008. The government of Georgia considers the republics to be Russian-occupied territories.

Sprent Arumogo Dabwido was a Nauruan politician who served as President of Nauru between 2011 and 2013, and was also a weightlifter. The son of a parliamentarian, Dabwido was originally elected to the Meneng Constituency in the Parliament of Nauru at the 2004 elections. Having served as Minister for Telecommunications in Marcus Stephen's government from 2009, Dabwido joined the Nauruan opposition faction in November 2011 after Stephen's resignation, and, having passed a motion of no confidence against interim president Freddie Pitcher, was elected president four days later. In his role as president, Dabwido functioned as chairman of the Cabinet of Nauru, and held various portfolios in the Nauruan government.

Abkhazia–Venezuela relations refers to bilateral relations between the breakaway Republic of Abkhazia and Venezuela. Venezuela recognised Abkhazia, along with South Ossetia, on 10 September 2009, almost ten years after the country declared independence from Georgia in 1999. Venezuela was the third state to recognise Abkhazia and South Ossetia, after Russia and Nicaragua.

The Government of President Vladislav Ardzinba was the first Government of the Republic of Abkhazia.

Oleg Botsiev is the current ambassador of South Ossetia to Abkhazia. He was appointed to the position by President Leonid Tibilov on 15 April 2013. On 19 August, Botsiev presented his credentials to Abkhazian Foreign Minister Viacheslav Chirikba, and on 20 August, to President Alexander Ankvab. Previously, Botsiev had been the Minister for Labour and Social Security of Abkhazia from December 1999 onwards, and Chief of the Cabinet Staff from 8 May 2003 until in 2005 Vladislav Ardzinba was succeeded by Sergei Bagapsh as President of Abkhazia.

The Minister for Internal Affairs holds a ministerial position in the government of the Republic of Abkhazia. The post existed in the Soviet period within the Council of Ministers of the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, and since then has been occupied by 10 politicians, of whom three have occupied it twice. The current Minister is Aslan Kobakhia.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Government of President Khajimba</span> Government of Abkhazia

The Government of President Raul Khajimba was the Government of the Republic of Abkhazia from 2014 until 2020.

Shamil Adzynba is the current First Vice Premier of Abkhazia in the Government of President Khajimba, and a two-time acting Prime Minister.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Independence Day (South Ossetia)</span> State holiday in South Ossetia

Independence Day or Republic Day is the main state holiday in the partially recognized Republic of South Ossetia. This date is celebrated on September 20. It commemorates South Ossetia's declaration of independence from the Georgian SSR in 1990, and the country's recognition as a sovereign state by Russia in 2008.
