Sar Chakrya Thon (born 1989), known professionally as Adda Angel, is a Cambodian songwriter and music producer. She is known for being a pioneer in the Cambodian Original Music Movement. [1] [2]

Life and career

Adda began her career as one of Cambodia's first female rap artist with the stage name DJ Adda. She is currently considered one of the top female pop stars of the new Cambodian Original Music scene. [3] She has shared the stage with international acts such as CL (singer) [4] and Rain (entertainer). She is currently signed to Smart Axiata Music Division. [3]

Adda has been an outspoken proponent for original song composition in the Cambodian music industry, publicly criticizing trends in Cambodian contemporary music which copies melodies from existing foreign songs. [5]

In 2012, Adda had a public Facebook row with Cambodian actor Kong Chomrong. The matter escalated to with threats of legal action but was ultimately resolved out of court. [6]

Her top three songs, គ្រាប់ពេជ្រ (Diamond), ពីរនាក់បានហេីយ (Just the Two of Us) and ភ្លើង (Fire) have over 20 million views on YouTube, [7] with Diamond staying in the Top 10 Smart Music Chart for over one year.

In November, 2017, she announced her relationship with American-Cambodian product designer and businessman Allen Dodgson Tan. [8]

In April, 2018, Adda announced the opening of her own beauty salon named Adda & Hair, located in Phnom Penh. [9]

She also ventured into acting, starring in a few films. Details of her life are relatively scarce. She disappeared during the Khmer Rouge regime of the late 1970s but the circumstances of her fate remain a mystery. Norodom Sihanouk granted Sothea the honorary title "Queen with the Golden Voice."

Norodom Sihamoni is King of Cambodia. He became King on 14 October 2004, a week after the abdication of his father, Norodom Sihanouk. He is the eldest son of Norodom Sihanouk and former Queen Consort Norodom Monineath and was Cambodia's ambassador to UNESCO, prior to his selection by a nine-member throne council to become the next king. Before ascending to the throne, Sihamoni was educated in Czechoslovakia and was known for his work as a cultural ambassador in Europe and as a classical ballet instructor.

The Phnom Penh Post is a daily English-language newspaper published in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Founded in 1992 by publisher Michael Hayes and Kathleen O'Keefe, it is Cambodia's oldest English-language newspaper. The paper was initially published fortnightly as a full-color tabloid; in 2008 it increased frequency to daily publication and redesigned the format as a Berliner. The Phnom Penh Post is also available in Khmer. It previously published a weekend magazine, 7Days, in its Friday edition. Since July 2014, it has published a weekly edition on Saturdays called Post Weekend, which was folded into the paper as a Friday supplement in 2017 and was discontinued in 2018.

Christopher Minko is an Australian musician and co-founder of the Phnom Penh-based Delta blues group called Krom. Living in Cambodia since 1996, Minko is also the founder and Secretary General of the Cambodian National Volleyball League (Disabled) NGO also known as CNVLD.

Yab Moung Records (YMR) was established in 2012 and was Cambodia's first alternative music label. Yab Moung was founded by Myles Hallin and Tom Reichelt in collaboration with several Khmer punk and metal bands, namely: Sliten6ix; The ANTIfate and No Forever. Tom Reichelt left in 2014, after that Timon Siebel & Samphors Un, two long time supporters, became major shareholders with Myley Rattle and began to run the label on the ground as a collective with various Khmer artists. The label has been partially rebranded since 2015 and is currently run and owned collectively by a group of dedicated Khmer alternative musicians with various roles within the organisation. Yab Moung Records has a studio which is located in the Kandal Province, just outside of Phnom Penh, which is also run by a collective of, predominantly Khmer, musicians and artists.

Kak Channthy was a Cambodian singer and vocalist of the band Cambodian Space Project. She has been described as "the barefoot diva of the Cambodian rice fields".

Cambodian rock of the 1960s and 1970s was a thriving and prolific music scene based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in which musicians created a unique sound by combining traditional Cambodian music forms with rock and pop influences from records imported into the country from Latin America, Europe, and the United States. U.S. armed forces radio that had been broadcast to troops stationed nearby during the Vietnam War was also a primary influence. This music scene was abruptly crushed by the Khmer Rouge communists in 1975, and many of its musicians disappeared or were executed during the ensuing Cambodian genocide. Due to its unique sounds and the tragic fate of many of its performers, the Cambodian rock scene has attracted the interest of music historians and record collectors, and the genre gained new popularity upon the international release of numerous compilation albums starting in the late 1990s.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Pin (harp)</span> Cambodian harp

The pin is a Cambodian arched harp, one of the most historically important instruments in Cambodian music. The instrument went extinct c. 1500s, and is now being restored in modern times. Its historical importance is emphasized by the very name for Cambodian classical music, pinpeat. After the pin was no longer being used, Cambodians continued to use the instrument's name for classical music into the present era. When the pin was no longer being used, the tonal range of other instruments was expanded, possibly to compensate. Burmese saung gauk and roneats had more keys for the chromatic scale and the number of gongs in the kong von thom and kong toch "more than doubled in number since the musician depicted on the Angkorian carvings."
