Oyo State is an inland state in southwestern Nigeria. Its capital is Ibadan, the third most populous city in the country and formerly the second most populous city in Africa. Oyo State is bordered to the north by Kwara State, to the east by Osun State, and to the southwest by Ogun State and the Republic of Benin. With a projected population of 7,840,864 in 2016, Oyo State is the fifth most populous in the Nigeria.

Senator Isiaka Abiola Adeyemi Ajimobi was a Nigerian politician from Oyo State, south-western Nigeria. He was formerly the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Oil and Chemical Marketing Company, a subsidiary of Shell Petroleum, Nigeria. He left the oil sector in 2002 after 26 years of meritorious service and was elected in 2003 as a Senator of the Republic of Nigeria representing Oyo South Senatorial District on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD). After one term in the senate, he contested in 2007 for the governorship seat of Oyo state under the banner of the All Nigeria People's Party, a bid which he lost. He contested again in the April 2011 gubernatorial elections under the Action Congress of Nigeria and was elected Governor of Oyo State in a closely contested vote. In 2019, he was succeeded by Oluwaseyi Makinde. He contested for Senator for his senatorial district but lost. In June 2020, he was confirmed to have COVID-19 and was announced dead on the 25th of June.

He established his first oil and gas private business called Makon Engineering and Technical Services, (METS) at the age of 29 in the year 1997, after earning years of work experience with international oil and gas companies.
Tomilayo Adekanye is a Nigerian professor of agricultural economics. She was the first female professor in any agricultural-related field in Nigeria, and the first in agricultural economics in Africa. She commenced her university teaching career as staff member of Department of Agricultural Economics at Obafemi Awolowo University between 1966 and 1975. She moved subsequently to University of Ibadan's Department of Agricultural Economics, as Lecturer I (1975), rising to the ranks of Senior Lecturer (1977), Associate Professor (Reader), and, in 1980, to the full position of Professor in 1983. Between 1990–91, she was the Commissioner for Trade and Investment in Oyo State. She is also a one-time commissioner of agriculture in the state. She is married to Bayo Adekanye, a professor of political science and chairman of the governing council of Chrisland University. Organizations and agencies with which she has previously consulted at the international level include ECA, ILO, FAO, IFAD, UNDP, UNICEF, UNIFEM, and Ford Foundation.

The 2023 Oyo State gubernatorial election will take place on 11 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Oyo State, concurrent with elections to the Oyo State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election will be held two weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP Governor Seyi Makinde is running for re-election and has been renominated by his party.
