The Adirondack Balloon Festival is an annually held hot-air balloon festival that takes place in Queensbury, New York during mid-to-late September, roughly two to three weeks following Labor Day.
The festival is a four-day event that has been hosted every year since 1973 (with the sole exception of 2020, when the event was cancelled due to COVID-19) [1] and has, particularly in recent years, consistently attracted well over 100,000 people from across the world over the course of its four-day timespan, mainly from surrounding areas such as Lake George, Plattsburgh, Saratoga Springs, and Québec province in neighboring Canada. Pilots, primarily professional and amateur balloonists from multiple regions, were also brought to Queensbury to participate in the event, [3] with close to 100 balloons being able to launch simultaneously provided the conditions allow for it. [4]
It was originally an event that was hosted at SUNY Adirondack, a community college in the area, however as the event gradually grew in scale and attendance over the years, the entire venue was relocated to Floyd-Bennett Memorial Airport, located just outside of the city of Glens Falls, New York. [5] The event continues to be held there today, despite the passing of both the festival's founder, the balloonist Walter Grishkot, as well as his wife, Joan, both of whom were considered to be pivotal to the event. [6] Its 50th-anniversary festival was held in September 2023. [7]
The festival itself is entirely not-for-profit, admission is free, and the event is open to all members of the public. Funding for the annual venue is raised entirely by the public and volunteers from within the community. Peak flight times, according to the website, are 5 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 8 p.m. during each day of the event. [8]
Glens Falls is a city in Warren County, New York, United States and is the central city of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 14,830 at the 2020 census. The name was given by Colonel Johannes Glen, the falls referring to a large waterfall in the Hudson River at the southern end of the city.

The Gordon Bennett Cup is the world's oldest gas balloon race, and is "regarded as the premier event of world balloon racing" according to the Los Angeles Times. Referred to as the "Blue Ribbon" of aeronautics, the first race started from Paris, France, on September 30, 1906. The event was sponsored by James Gordon Bennett Jr., the millionaire sportsman and owner of the New York Herald newspaper. According to the organizers, the aim of the contest "is simple: to fly the furthest distance from the launch site." The contest ran from 1906 to 1938, interrupted by World War I and in 1931, but was suspended in 1939 when the hosts, Poland, were invaded at the start of World War II. The event was not resurrected until 1979, when American Tom Heinsheimer, an atmospheric physicist, gained permission from the holders to host the trophy. The competition was not officially reinstated by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) until 1983.
Croydon Road Recreation Ground is a public park located in Beckenham in the London Borough of Bromley. It is near the High St and adjacent to Beckenham Beacon. The park features a café and bandstand, as well as a bowling green and other sports facilities. The park was laid out by the Sydenham firm Reid and Bornemann in 1890 and was formally opened on 23 September 1891.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a yearly hot air balloon festival that takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, during early October. The Balloon Fiesta is a nine-day event occurring in the first full week of October, and has over 500 hot air balloons each year, far from its beginnings of merely 13 balloons in 1972. The event is the largest balloon festival in the world, followed by the Grand Est Mondial Air in France, and the León International Balloon Festival in Mexico.
Benjamin L. "Ben" Abruzzo was an American balloonist and businessman who helped make Albuquerque, New Mexico, into an international ballooning center. He was part of the balloon crews that made the first Atlantic Ocean crossing by balloon in the Double Eagle II and the first Pacific Ocean crossing by balloon in the Double Eagle V.

The Great Pershing Balloon Derby is a hot air balloon festival held each Labor Day weekend near Brookfield, Missouri. The three-day festival draws balloonists from the midwest and as far away as Florida and the Pacific Northwest. It is named in honor of General John J. Pershing, leader of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I and a native of nearby Laclede, Missouri. The Great Pershing Balloon Derby (GPBD) has been recognized as the longest running continually sanctioned ballooning event in the U.S. by the Balloon Federation of America.
Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport is a county-owned, public-use airport in Warren County, New York, United States. It is located three nautical miles (6 km) northeast of the central business district of Glens Falls, in the town of Queensbury. This airport is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a general aviation facility.
Balloons over Waikato is an annual hot air balloon festival held in Hamilton, New Zealand since 1999 by the non-profit organisation Balloons over Waikato Trust. The event spans five days during autumn and attracts both local and overseas balloonists. The Festival is held primarily at Innes Common, at Hamilton Lake, which gets an estimated 130,000 visitors during the festival. The highlight of the festival, the "Night glow" is held at the University of Waikato where an estimated 80,000+ people attend to watch the lighting of balloons putting on a spectacular glow to music.

Lit for Life is an annual literary festival organised by the English daily The Hindu in Chennai, India. The festival was inaugurated in 2010, where it was part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of The Hindu's Literary Review. In 2011 the Lit for Life became an independent one-day event. It has over the years developed into a three-day festival of literature and thought, featuring notable authors and speakers from all over the world. In 2020, the festival, that always takes place in mid-January, will celebrate its 10th anniversary. Main initiator and organiser of the Lit for Life is Dr Nirmala Lakshman, Director of The Hindu Group of Publications, and Chairperson of the Board of The Hindu Tamil.
Vera Simons (1920–2012) was an inventor, artist, and balloonist. She became known in the 1950s and 1960s as a leader in high altitude gas balloon development and exploration, belonging to a group of pioneers known as the "Pre-Astronauts."
The All-Ohio Balloon Festival is an annual hot air balloon showcase held at the Union County Airport in Marysville, Ohio. In addition to hot air balloons, the event hosts rides in helicopters, airplanes, and balloons; live music; and food in addition to various activities for kids. Other attractions include skydivers and pets for adoption.
