Neyyattinkara taluk includes 4 assembly constituencies (Kattakada, Neyyattinkara, Parassala, Kovalam) in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. In early 2012, Neyyattinkara constituency attracted statewide attention, as it witnessed a much fiercely contested by-elections that Kerala Politics have ever seen caused by the resignation of the MLA R. Selvaraj. The tri-cornered contest was between O. Rajagopal of BJP, F. Lawrence of CPI(M) and Selvaraj (Now, of INC), with Selvaraj emerging as the winner finally.

Neyyattinkara MLA: K. A. Ansalan, (Communist Party of India (Marxist) party, elected as MLA on 2016). In 2016 Assembly Election, K. Ansalan, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate, won a stunning victory by a margin of 9,543 votes against R. Selvaraj, who defected from the CPI (M) to the Congress in 2012 and romped home by a margin of 6,334 votes in the by-election.

Neyyattinkara Municipality led by LDF COM. WR Heeba CPI(M) district committee member elected as chairperson and Com. KK Shibu CPI(M) Vice chairman.

2014 Elections

In the 2014 Parliament Election (held on 2014-04-20) Dr. Shashi Tharoor (UDF) got maximum number of votes from Neyyattinkara Constituency i.e., Neyyattinkara – UDF – 48,009, BJP – 28958, LDF – 39806; Dr. Tharoor got an additional 19,051 votes against BJP from Neyyattinkara Constituency alone that resulted in his ultimate success against BJP. Finally, he won the election with 14,501 votes. Neyyattinkara, is a Municipal Town and a major industrial and commercial hub located at the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram metropolitan area in Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala State, and also the headquarters of Neyyattinkara Taluk. The town is situated on the banks of Neyyar River, one of the principal rivers in the district and hence its name. Neyyatinkara in Malayalam literally means "the shore of the river Neyyar". Parassala (Malaynam:പാറശ്ശാല) is a small town located near the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.It comes under Thiruvananthapuram district at southern tip of Kerala. It is situated 34 km south of state capital Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, bordering Tamil Nadu.

He was a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the present ruling party in Kerala but resigned from the Kerala Legislature and the party on 9 March 2012 and joined Indian National Congress party. His resignation was attributed to rampant factionalism in his party. After joining the Indian National Congress, he contested the by-election from Neyyattinkara on "Hand" symbol and romped home with a margin of 6,334 votes, pushing up the ruling UDF's slender majority in the 140-member Kerala Assembly to 73. He again contested from the same constituency in 2016 and 2021. but he got defeated in both elections, i.e. for 9543 votes in 2016 and it increased to 14262 votes in 2021. He was defeated by K. Ansalan of CPI(M) in both elections.

Turnout for the election was at 70.66% In the Lok Sabha, INC formed a minority government under the premiership of P. V. Narasimha Rao.

Turnout for the election was at 79.30% In the Lok Sabha, INC won plurality of seats, however Janata Dal (JD), led by V. P. Singh formed the government, albeit a short-lived one, with support from BJP and CPI(M).
