Adrian Alejandro Wittwer (born 1986) [1] is a Swiss extreme athlete and ice swimmer.

Life

Wittwer lives in Bolligen in the Canton of Bern. [2] As an extreme athlete he participated in cross country running and marathons [3] as well as extreme swimming. In 2012, Wittwer successfully transversally crossed Lake Constace. In 2013, he tried to cross the longitude of the lake from Bodman-Ludwigshafen to Bregenz, a distance no one ever completed. [4] He had to abort after 27 of the 64 kilometres because of weather conditions. [5] [6]

Through other extreme swimmers Wittwer got into ice swimming [2] [7] and qualified for the Ice Swimming World Championship in 2017. He participated in the WC in 2018 in Tallinn and won 6th place in the 200m breaststroke competition. [8] In the German Opens in 2018 he qualified for the WC in 2019. [9] [10]

In February 2019, Wittwer completed the Ice Mile Challenge, [11] [12] which means swimming a mile in water below 5 °C with only goggles, a swimming cap and swim trunks, in 3 °C cold water in 41 minutes and 46 seconds. [13] He is the first Swiss man to complete this challenge. In March 2019 Wittwer won 2nd place in the WC for 50m breaststroke.

Wittwer works for the Swiss Military at the department for defence, public safety and sports. In 2017, Wittwer was part of a NATO mission to Kosovo for 6 months, as part of a peace supporting operation of Swisscoy, He is active for the Green Liberal Party of Switzerland and is part of the volunteer fire department. Egon Henninger is a German former swimmer. He competed at the 1960, 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics in the 200 m breaststroke and finished in fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively. He won silver medals in the 4 × 100 m medley relay in 1964 and 1968. He won three medals in these two swimming events at the European championships in 1962 and 1966.

Yannick Käser is a Swiss swimmer, specializing in breaststroke events. He is a 7-time Swiss swimming champion, a multiple-time age-group record holder, and a member of the swimming team for Virginia Cavaliers. She is the sister of one of the nation's prominent triathletes Jan van Berkel, who forged and motivated her to compete internationally in swimming.

Seraina Then (Prünte) is a Swiss former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. She currently holds a Swiss record in the 100 m freestyle (56.06) from the German Olympic Trials in Berlin (2008). A single-time Olympian (2004), Prunte played for the Nikar Swimming Club in Heidelberg, before she trained under head coach Dirk Reinecke as part of the Swiss national team.

Carmela Schlegel is a former Swiss swimmer who specialized in breaststroke events. She is a single-time Olympian (2004), a double Swiss champion, and a former national record holder in the 100 m breaststroke. Schlegel also played for Uster Wallisellen Swim Club in Uster, under her coach Ralph Müller.

Ina Hüging is a German former swimmer, who specialized in breaststroke events. She became a top 16 finalist in the 200 m breaststroke at the World and European Championships, and later represented Germany, as a 20-year-old, at the 2000 Summer Olympics. During her sporting career, Hüging trained for Münster Swim Sport Club, under longtime coach and mentor Henning Lambertz.
