Afrasheem Ali (died 2 October 2012) was a Maldivian politician who was a member of the People's Majlis for the Progressive Party of Maldives representing Raa Atoll Ungoofaru Constituency,in the 17th sitting of the Maldives Parliament.
Ali went to the International Islamic University Malaysia and did his Doctor of Philosophy. [1]
After completing his PhD,he returned to the Maldives in 2007 and joined the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP). [1] He also held the position of Director General of the Ministry of Home Affairs as well as the advisor to the Minister. [1] He was elected as the People's Majlis member for the Ungoofaru constituency in the 2009 Maldivian parliamentary election. [1] He was also one of the members of the council of the DRP and the president of the religious affairs council. [1] In October 2011,he switched to the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and became a council member and the president of the religious affairs council. [1] He held the position of Vice President of the Judicial Service Commission. [1]
Dr Afrasheem was murdered near his residence on 2 October 2012. He was already pronounced dead when brought to ADK Hospital that day. [2] [3]
The investigation to the death of Dr Afrasheem was one of the largest scale operations carried out by the Maldives Police Service with regular press briefings. On 23 May 2013 Hussain Humam,a suspect apprehended related to the stabbing of Dr Afrasheem,confessed to the murder,which he later retracted as he alleged he was coeerced to by then State Minister for Home Affairs Mohamed Fayaz. [4] [5] Humam was convicted,and sentenced to death. His execution would be the first for over sixty years in the Maldives if it is carried out. Amnesty International reports that it has serious concerns about the trial and conviction. [6] His execution was halted by a request of the United Nations Human Rights Committee. [7]
The politics of the Maldives take place in the framework of a presidential representative democratic republic,whereby the President is the Head of Government. Executive power is exercised by the government. The President heads the executive branch and appoints the Cabinet;like many presidential democracies,each member of the cabinet need to be approved by the Parliament. The President,along with their pick for vice president,is directly elected by the denizens to a five-year term by a secret ballot. Once in office,they could be re-elected to a second 5-year term,which is the limit allowed by the Constitution. The current President of the Maldives is Mohamed Muizzu,when his predecessor,Ibrahim Mohamed Solih lost the 2023 Maldivian presidential election.
Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is a Maldivian statesman,diplomat and scholar who served as the 3rd president of the Maldives from 1978 to 2008. He previously served as the Minister of Transport from 1977 to 1978,and as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations from 1976 to 1977. The longest-serving Maldivian president,Gayoom was the longest-serving leader in Asia.
