Afshin Marashi

Afshin Marashi is an American academic. He is Professor of History at the University of Oklahoma. He is the current holder of the Farzaneh Family Chair in Modern Iranian History. [1] He received his PhD from the University of California in 2003, [2] and has worked at the University of Kansas and California State University in the past. [2] In addition to English, he has a reading/speaking command of Persian, and a reading command of Turkish, French and Spanish. [3]

Pāpak Fort or Babak Castle, ″Ghal’eh-e Baz″ is a large citadel on the top of a mountain in the Arasbaran forests, 50 km from Ahar, one parasang from Ardabil, 6 km southwest of Kalibar City in northwestern Iran. Ḥaydar ibn Kāwūs, better known by his hereditary title of al-Afshīn, was a senior general of Sogdian Iranian descent at the court of the Abbasid caliphs and a vassal prince of Oshrusana. He played a leading role in the campaigns of Caliph al-Mu'tasim, and was responsible for the suppression of the rebellion of Babak Khorramdin and for his battlefield victory over the Byzantine emperor Theophilos during the Amorium campaign. Eventually he was suspected of disloyalty and was arrested, tried and then executed in June 841.
